It's #NewPodcastEpisode time!
Later than planned, but you can join @jsbilsbrough, @jae, and @alexlowe30 for their discussion of #Apple's #WWDC2024 Keynote, including our thoughts on AI (Apple Intelligence) and all the other updates they announced.

Anyone else miss this at WWDC this year?
Quite some time went by since my last blog post. Now I was able find some time again and tested out the new TextRenderer protocol to create a native SwiftUI highlighted Text view.
Check out my new post where I show how you can implement this: https://alexanderweiss.dev/blog/2024-06-24-using-textrenderer-to-create-highlighted-text

Now things have calmed down, I thought I’d share my thoughts on this year’s OS updates.
Lots to get excited about, but it’s not without disappointment for iPad users.
About time! This will be great for those naps that sneak up on me on the weekends: “watchOS 11 appears to include a new feature that allows an Apple Watch to automatically detect and record when you're taking a nap. As shared on Reddit, an Apple Watch owner took a nap and was able to see the sleep data recorded in the Health app, despite not putting the device in Sleep Mode.”

“The lesson here, for all of us, is pretty clear--it's okay to let this sort of thing pass. You don't have to respond when attacked online. ... Instead, ignore the noise, focus on doing what you're supposed to do, and let everything else take care of itself.”

@MuseumShuffle I really loved your enthusiasm about #wwdc2024 and reading about that in your toots
#WWDC2024 biggest praise for #swift on server work goes to @opticalaberration (not mentioned by name afaik) for his projects being called out from the stage:
- vscode-swift https://github.com/swiftlang/vscode-swift
- hummingbird https://github.com/hummingbird-project/hummingbird
well deserved, underpreciated

Can anyone at WWDC2024 or with access to MacOS Sequoia test if the new OS has fixed the Dock gutter, where Fitt's Law goes to die?
Edit, to clarify (and hopefully get more traction, as no-one with access to Sequoia has weighed in yet):
In Sonoma: If you want to launch an app from the dock, you can mouse right to the edge of the screen, click, and the app will launch (as it should). *But* if you try to drag a file to an app (e.g. you want to open a .txt file in Pages instead of TextEdit), there is a ~5px gutter between the Dock and the edge of the screen that is inactive - if you release the mouse button there, the file will not open.
This is clearly a bug (yes, I've reported it), as it runs counter to one of the fundamental design principles that the Mac is based on. Fitt’s Law states (partly) that the time required for a person to move a pointer to a target area depends on the size of the target. Larger target, less time. If you put menus (and dock items) right at the edge of the screen, then the target becomes *very* large as you can't overshoot the edge. This is why the Mac operating systems always had menus at the top of the screen, as opposed to individual windows.
They talked about some things, but not a lot caught my attention this time around.
WWDC 2024: Everything Apple announced today including iOS 18, AI with Apple Intelligence and more
Ok, I was a bit quick to judge Private Cloud. It looks like it's a properly thought-out solution that likely has been in the works for a while now and is suitable for general computing. (https://security.apple.com/blog/private-cloud-compute/)
It's a pity it got rolled together with AI announcements between the generative art and OpenAI partnership announcement rather than getting an "One more thing" + new product announcement as it would have deserved.
