Nice to see the discussion shifting from #quantumcomputing "supremacy" to quantum utility and advantage.

This is quite involved, a very niche use case, and more of a proof-of-concept, but still.

Glad to see some progress on the frontiers of #computing that isn't #AI hype.

"Tech fascism didn’t rise in secret — it grew in plain sight. Why most journalists or politicians notice?

In this episode of The Nerd Reich Podcast, host Gil Duran speaks with legendary tech critic Paulina Borsook, author of Cyberselfish, the prophetic book that warned about the rise of Silicon Valley authoritarianism and technofascism decades before Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and the far-right tech elite took power.

We dive deep into how Silicon Valley’s toxic libertarianism evolved into a global far-right propaganda machine, why tech journalists failed to sound the alarm, and what happens next as AI, surveillance, and billionaire power reshape democracy.

It seems weird that the big AI-related companies have billions of dollars available and that they can't give at least some of that to Wikipedia: 404media.co/wikipedia-says-ai-

But instead, they just seem to slosh the money around among themselves -- I'm sure @pluralistic has a nice explainer on how OpenAI promises to spend N billion dollars on Oracle stuff, and Oracle promises to buy N billion dollars of Nvidia stuff, and Nvidia promises to buy N billion dollars of OpenAI stuff...where N is so large compared with revenue and things like "the actual economy of the world".

Indeed, it seems like those spending agreements can't possibly actually work except as some kind of new kind of art: collections of spreadsheets.

(If I can chisel away at some rocks and produce something expressing human nature, surely I can create some spreadsheets that reveal insight into human nature, right?)

Anyway. It seems like it would be fitting if just a tiny slice of those billions of dollars could be siphoned off to, say, Wikipedia and the Internet Archive.

“Tangen has made no secret of his enthusiasm for AI. In an interview in May, the 59-year-old former hedge fund manager said he’s been running around “like a maniac” trying to get staff to use the technology, even going so far as to say that employees shunning AI “will never be promoted.””

Managers and boss-types seem especially susceptible to the ass-kissing of LLM chatbots.
