Was genau will mir die #Swisstopo App sagen?

Ich bin 21.6 km in 7h55m, dabei 862 m rauf und 1144 m runter gegangen?

… oder…

ich bin 21.6 km in 7h55m, dabei 935 m rauf und 1188 m runter gegangen?

Was denn nun? 🤔

Also netto Laufdauer, ohne Pause?

Wer weiss Rat?

Today my self-designed map came per post. The new feature (at least it was not there the last time I ordered) of uploading GPX files is super. Have uploaded the 5 routes of the multi-day hike and gave them alternate colors. Also the fact that you can add more text (left bottom) is nice.

The SwissTopo app is THE app to have during hikes in Switzerland. Of course it features its own, best-in-the-world, maps and you can create routes, get estimates on remaining time/elevation/distance.

But of course it can still be improved. For me it would be the ability to create routes on the PC (instead of using Schweizmobil) and manage routes better. Basically a combination of SwissTopo and Schweizmobil would be super.

I met the person responsible for the SwissTopo app development today and this Saturday there is a Open House at the SwissTopo HQ and will probably go.

Which improvements would you like to see and I should relay to them?

The latest report (in German) on the costs and impacts of #OpenGovernmentData from the Federal Office of Topography #swisstopo is a validation and critique of advocating for data as a public good.

For governments this paper should be a nice check on expectations and outcomes, for example for Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology #MeteoSwiss - who from 1 April 2025 plans to make its data available for free reuse.

Today I learned about yet another cool map layer on SwissTopo, makers of the beautiful and useful maps of Switzerland.

If your start to type "Last glacial maximum (map) 500" the layer is shown and tells you at what elevation the ice was. No bathing in Lake Thun at that time.

Link directly to the map with layer activated:

There are a lot more layers like noice levels of airports, temperatures 4000 meter under ground, Swiss parks, etc. Just start typing a letter and see what kind of maps can be selected.
