"By the time we arrive at the scene of #Jesus flipping the merchants’ tables in the Temple, #Jews are firmly established as the villains. “My house should be a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of thieves,” Jesus shouts at the #Pharisees after he ransacks the Temple market.

That quote is straight from the #gospels, just as much canon as Judas and the Pharisees turning Jesus in; the story is what it is. But the villainous depiction of the Jews is not part of the text.

Of course, the necessity of presenting Jesus’ teachings as better than the existing #Jewish practices is only mandatory if the show’s aim is to proselytize — which the show’s writers have claimed it is not; they’re just making good #TV, they said. But if the writing choices didn’t make the show’s #Christian mission clear enough, it’s made explicit by the testimonials the show posts from viewers about how the show brought them closer to Jesus."

Since the 1960s, the RCC position is that, theocracy in any form, is inherently authoritarian. Authoritarianism goes against not just the #Gospels but, the Beatitudes and ultimately the core of Christianity: Do unto others.

in other words, you can’t be a Christian and be against religious freedom. theocracy is #heresy.

Why are there so many in the New Testament? In this episode we will not be going over the old ground of what forgery is (an author falsely claiming to be a famous person) or how it was justified in the ancient world, even among writers who urge high ethical standards (!). We are instead interested in the startling scholarly claim that of the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, only eight of them were probably written by the person to whom they are attributed. In some cases the attributions are made by later readers (the author of Mark does not claim to be Mark); but in many cases the authors themselves make the false claim (2 Peter claims to be written by Peter). We might understand how one or two books like this managed to get into the Christian New Testament. But nineteen?

He argues that multiple exodus allusions in the midsection of Matthew’s Gospel reveal an Evangelist who either anticipated the possible need for withdrawal from hostile host communities or affirmed an ongoing separation process.
