Finding Inspiration: The Key to Unlocking Your Potential?
As previous readers of this blog will know, I have, ahem, more than a few interests in my life. From flying to running, physics and astronomy, to hill walking, music is a passion and of course I also enjoy writing – although, I will concede I’ve not exactly been prolific on that front this year…
Sorry about that!
All of this takes place around a fairly demanding full time career in the IT sector as a senior manager at a large systems integrator.
How then, do I manage to enjoy all of these activities?
What has been the single most important thing, certainly to me, that has made these things accessible? And what has spurred me on to, not simply be content to fly aeroplanes, an outstanding achievement in its own right, but to push myself to become an instructor and teach others?
Why am I currently undertaking a second degree, completely unnecessary in the context of my occupation, in physics?
What is the reason that I am also currently in the process of becoming a UKA licensed Run Leader, the first step on the ladder to being a licensed Running Coach?
Well role models is one way of explaining it, in some cases more formally, mentors, but in others its simply inspirational people.
I’ve had some excellent mentors at work, whether that was Nic Wood who gave me some amazing opportunities earlier on in my IT career, or Paddy Meany more latterly who taught me the value of saying ‘no’, and to do it without explaining myself all the time.

In the flying world its hugely important to have a good bond with your instructor and Marcus Furniss who taught me to fly was fantastic. To take that next step into the world of instructing, I was encouraged and coached by James Walker who runs the school I now fly for at the weekends – when the UK weather plays ball… but that’s another story!
Running came largely as the result of a dare about 20 years ago. With 6 weeks until the Wolverhampton Half Marathon my Sergeant in the Territorial Army, Tim, challenged me to enter. I’d never done any real running before, apart from what I had to do in the reserves. But I’d seen how fit Tim was, and he was a fair bit older than me, so I fancied a bit of that! I took the dare and got round on a very hot day in about 2:15.
Since then my inspiration has come from afar, Paula Radcliffe, Alistair Brownlee (yes I know he’s a triathlete), former Olympian Chris Thompson, Aly Dixon and many others have all inspired me to try and run faster and better than before. I’ve had input from Michelle Mortimer who has coached me for some races and latterly has helped me to prepare to become a Run Leader as well.
In the world of writing I was inspired by a friend, Sarah Northwood, who’d made the leap to writing and also encouraged by Geoff Hill the editor of Microlight Flying magazine.
I could go on, and if you’ve made it this far, well done. My point is simple. Whilst I bring a certain amount of drive and determination to whatever I do, the single most important external factor has been mentors and inspirational people. Find those and you will find that whatever you want to do suddenly seems a little more achievable.
Now back to trying to beat those PB race times from 13 years ago…
