When you grow native plants, you not only attract butterflies and bees, but you also attract beautiful predators, like this Eastern Pondhawk dragonfly. #dragonflies #Odonata #nativeplants #Illinois #nature #macro #photography #wildlifephotography #photographylovers
July 2025 native plant news from Wild Ones:
"A new study, published in Global Change Biology last month by scientists from Michigan State University, has found that previous research may have underestimated how plants respond to a warming climate."
Today’s plan is to propagate Frogfruit.
Another native ground cover! I mean, I can do mulching, but that won’t attract bees and butterflies. This is a host plant for some butterflies here in South Florida.
I got the cuttings in the morning. Once the sun goes down, I will plant these directly in the soil. That’s the recommendation.
I decided it *might* be safe to take down the deer fence, at least for the patch at the front on the hill—the plants have grown in way faster than I expected (all that rain). We’ll see if the deer make me sad.
Plus this beauty showed up in the back!

Out the front of our house when we moved here there was a rose bed. We replaced that with some grevillea.
Result: full ground coverage, and instead of sparrows and blackbirds, we saw a scrap between a New Holland Honeyeater and an Eastern Spinebill for prime nectar spots.
The second way is by using a cutting.
I am trying my luck at propagating sunshine mimosa. This is first way of doing it — straight from soil.
A couple pics from the garden. The blazing star is starting to bloom and attract bumblebees. The scarlet beebalm is hidden in the secret garden of native grasses and false sunflowers.

Update on mystery sunflower! I’m calling it a Hairy Sunflower (Helianthus hirsutus). Your intrepid reporter braved heat, humidity, and fierce chiggers to make some more observations.
The flowers are growing on the roadside on a wooded river bluff.
@Spaceways Thank you for sharing photographs of more varieties of St. John’s Wort. #nativeplants.
@colo_lee Yes. They are healthy in poor soils too. Ours are about 18” tall at the bloom. And the leaves are like vertical yucca leaves this time of year. They are great companions in the zone 4b rock garden with other shorter native plants. #nativeplants, #Zone4b
July 27, 2025. Nodding Onion. These clumps are flourishing. We grew nodding onions from seeds two seasons ago to split and transplant. These root clumps split easily for spring transplanting. The pollinators like this variety in the habitat. #nativeplants, #pollinators, #minnesota
July 27, 2025. Shrubby St. Johns Wort. The bumblebees love the golden blossoms. They race across the new blossoms. How are they getting any nectar at such speed? Their pollen baskets fill up as they run. These are good plants. Oh that every yellow blossom shrub was a St. John’s Wort. #nativeplants, #pollinators, #minnesota.
