Nope. Trump has already floated the trial-balloon of renting out detainees as labour, plus the 13th Amendment in their constitution actually permits slavery for incarcerated persons, so they have their legal loophole.

You watch: once the camps are all set up the next move for the administration to say: “Welp, it’s only fair that all these illegals should have to contribute to the cost of their upkeep” and for the prison-industrial complex to start leasing detainees back to the farms, motels and Home Depots that they scooped them up from, for a tidy profit of course.

This is the intersection where end-stage capitalism meets white supremacy. Corporations despise paying for labour, since it represents one of their biggest line-items, and you can’t get cheaper than free (or nearly free).

Whatever can’t be automated will be replaced by slave labour, and the neat thing about prison labour is that anyone can be turned into a criminal with the simple stroke of a pen.

Rage of the #Oligarchs - #NaomiKlein: ‘What They Want Is Absolutely Everything’

The all-star academic and Shock Doctrine author breaks down the dark logic of Trump and Musk’s path of destruction — and what the world’s richest people really want

May 4, 2025

Excerpt: [Klein] "But now, #capitalism has entered a radical and #apocalyptic phase. There is no #utopian vision in any of this. Instead, there’s a final battle. And this is where it gets really dark. The people who are advancing this agenda are also building their #LuxuryBunkers and their #spaceships to #Mars. They don’t believe that there is a future. These people believe history is ending, literally. It’s end times! Get onto your rocket ship, or get into your golden city in the sky. And that is distinct."

Rolling Stone · Naomi Klein: ‘What They Want Is Absolutely Everything’By Tim Dickinson

“Techno-libertarianism.” It represents a dangerous alignment of anti-democratic thought with immense technological and financial resources, posing significant challenges to traditional conceptions of democratic governance and civic responsibility."

The coup doesn't intend to allow us to vote them out of power. It will ultimately take force to accomplish that.

🥥 AI is now screwing renters.
Property management software Real Page, used by many landlords, deploys AI to artificially inflate rental prices in the United States by more than $3.6 billion annually, according to a new report by the White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA).
RealPage includes an "AI Revenue Management" tool that facilitates price coordination to set higher rents.

Think Ed Zitron's talking about the healthcare system in the Untied Snakes?
He could be, but he isn't.
Is he critiquing end-stage capitalism?
Sure sounds like it, but he's only focusing on one aspect of it: modern information technology.
It's the rotten heart at the core of our illusion of control in a world gone mad and blind to its madness. 🥥

Roughly paraphrasing:

A few years ago, tech journalist Kara Swisher told Elon Musk he "should either start caring about income inequality or armor plate his Tesla". She goes on to say that he seemed to like the later idea.

Now we have the Cyber Truck, and attempts to sell it by firing arrows at the windshield, and maybe the wedge shape is a design attempt to make it makeshift barrier proof.

I think we have our answer.

“We all like a good shop at Kmart, buying those things we didn’t know we needed."

What a depressing statement from our deputy mayor on the return of Kmart to Ōtepoti - talk about mindless consumerism 😬

I’m deliberately not linking to the article this quote comes from, because the last thing this business needs is more publicity. You can easily find the celebratory puff piece in the online ODT if you want to.
