Potts yorks Booth for 40 and it is 324-9, 15 needed to win and number 11 (Vishwa Fernando) walking in to join number 10 (Ethan Bamber).

Off for bad light at The Oval (it is sufficiently gloomy that the players now have the multiple shadows caused by floodlights as opposed to the single shadow caused by the sun). Hampshire are 299-5 and there are 10 overs scheduled.

Gubbins has been pinned LBW by Fisher for 103. Hampshire 247-5.

A look at what is going on as the second round of county championship 2025 fixtures draws towards a close, and a large photo gallery. Includes a slamming of Leicestershire for the cowardice that saw them bat on this morning with their lead already past 400.

New ball taken by Surrey. Wickets needed very quickly.

Tea on day four. Hampshire are 216-4. This partnership between Gubbins and Albert may well have saved them. The new ball is due in two overs time, and represents Surrey's last serious chance of forcing an opening.

Lunch on day four. Hampshire are 121-4, needing 256 more to win. Surrey need six more wickets.

The cowards known as Leicestershire have finally declared at 357-9, an overall advantage of 448, and will have approximately 1 hour 15 minutes plus two full sessions to bowl out Derbyshire. Batting on for so long in their second innings cannot be defended, and I sincerely hope that Derbyshire punish them by batting through for the draw in some comfort.

Leciestershire win this week's white feather for cowardice - on the final day, and with their lead already 434 they are still batting on rather than attempting to bowl their opponents out a second time.

Under way at the Oval. The first two sessions should be clear, but there may be bad weather in the third. If Hampshire escape with a draw they can count themselves incredibly lucky - after last night's stupidity with night watchers they deserve nothing from this match.

Stumps on day three at The Oval, the last match to finish for the day. Hampshire are 35-3 chasing 377 to win. They made a very questionable decision to send Brad Wheal in as a night watcher with 13 overs still scheduled (of which we got nine), and then a downright stupid one to use Sonny Baker as a second when Wheal was out. In the end Gubbins who they had been so desperate to protect saw it through in company with Middleton.

Gubbins, who Hampshire blew two wickets trying to protect, is off the mark with a single.

Baker goes first ball and it is 30-3 with Clark on a hat trick, and Hampshire's obsession with protecting their regular number three has put them right in the mire. Sending Wheal in when they did was dubious given how many overs there were still to be bowled, sending Baker in as a second night watcher was just plain crazy.

Brad Wheal goes bowled by Clark for 9 (28). Had he been sent in at a sensible time to deploy a night watcher it would have been a fine effort, but as it is Hampshire are 30-2, still needing 347 to win. Sonny Baker has been a sent in a second night watch which will mean Abbott batting at number 11.

The light is now too poor for seamers, so Surrey have turned to the very occasional off spin of Rory Burns, possessor of precisely two first class scalps in a very long career (the nearest other approaches to a spin option being Sibley or Pope bowling filthy "leg spin").
