I heard recently that tinnitus is actually not hearing damage at all, but brain damage. In that, you can go as far as disconnecting your auditory nerve completely, and you'll still hear the tinnitus. I am still trying to make sense of that.
@vladimirchicken yes, from what I've read it's termed as something like "neurological change following a change to the peripheral hearing". Wild. Until last week I had no idea how common it is, and how poorly understood.
