After reading a post about physical manuals for software, I just have to ask y'all if you ever contributed to paper software documentation?

Original post: fosstodon.org/@amoroso/1124695

FosstodonPaolo Amoroso (@amoroso@fosstodon.org)A young developer who never used Windows 98 back in the day stumbled upon an introductory book on the operating system and posted his impressions on skimming it, which brought him joy. He wrote: "I was also left with the impression that perhaps I would like more software to come with a physical manual." https://jamesg.blog/2024/05/19/windows-98-manual #windows98 #documentation #retrocomputing

@nina_kali_nina this was the guide for OEMs who were porting the phone web browser I worked on to their phones.

Lots of it was a lightly-tidied output from running Doxygen over the source code header files, with some wraparound extra chapters and explanation added to round it out.

@nina_kali_nina it's been a while since I opened my copy. Presumably it's all still copyright MS; always seemed a bit strange that we were supposed to hand back all copyright material we had but then we were given a copy of that as a leaving gift, which includes a CD with the all the source code in it 🤷

@amcewen when Microsoft goes bankrupt, I hope to see this on the internet archive, then 😅 (half joking)
