computerfolk:
I'm looking for a small laptop that I can use when I'm commuting or doing research visits. I'm looking for:
- light but sturdy
- "full day" battery (5 hours would be fine)
- "eeepc" form factor or similar (<= 12" screen)
- runs Linux (obvs) w/ supported wifi, bluetooth etc
- can run an external monitor/projector
- doesn't need to be super-fast but I should be able to run simple/exploratory analyses in R
- <<1000GBP (refurbished is fine!)
Does this exist?
I tried to get my hands on one of the Planet Computing "PDAs" but it turns out they are just taking people's money and not shipping orders :(
@millerdl
Not a traditional laptop but SteamDeck is decently priced for a Linux computer. Pretty good specs as well. Not sure how well the chipset will work though for R.
@mortalglitch @millerdl R would work fine, it's a standard AMD x86_64 computer in a weird-shaped box. In every respect except the screen size & number of USB ports it's equal or better in specs to the Dell XPS I work on every day. But it's surprisingly bulky, particularly in its protective case, to the extent that I rarely carry it on long train journeys (which I expected would be part of the point of a portable gaming PC).
@wjt @mortalglitch ah, yeah minimizing bulk in my backpack is one of the major requirements. Also no physical keyboard?
@millerdl @mortalglitch No physical keyboard. Cool joysticks though!
@wjt @mortalglitch that would certainly make writing e-mails more interesting...
