I'd note, too, contra the superlicious critic dismissing this film as soapy, that the story it's telling is quite deliberately being pitched against a moment in history when the drama depicted in the film seems poised to revisit us: mass roundups and mass deportations of targeted minority groups with a military commanded by a dictator carrying out the task?
And how will the rest of us respond if this comes to pass?
We need that belief in light and love.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
Yes, these are idealistic mantras, of a sort. But the history the film is depicting is real history in which the ideas captured in these mantras were matters of life or death to those being hunted by Nazi murderers and those risking their lives to shelter the hunted.

I read one review and wonder if the man writing it saw the same film I did. He takes the movie to task for repeating mantras he regards as simplistic and idealistic. They include the statement,
“When kindness can cost you your life, it becomes a miracle.”
And:
“The world of reality has its limits. The world of imagination is boundless.”
The film also has the Holocaust survivor as an aged, world-renowned artist, quoting Dr. King:

The film tells the story of a young Jewish Holocaust survivor and the brutalization of her French town by the Nazis with the active complicity of many of its own citizens and the courageous resistance that led some citizens to push back and even lose their lives in doing so, and in protecting people sought by the Nazis including the young Jewish survivor.
Friends invited us this weekend to see the new film "White Bird." Another friend whose theater acumen vastly surpasses ours saw it recently and highly recommended it to us. I'm glad we accepted the invitation and listened to the recommendation, since the movie tells a painful, transformative story about hope in the darkest of times, and about the fragile threads that bind us and enable us to rise above brutal oppression.
I spoke with White Bird filmmakers Marc Forster and Renée Wolfe for Awards Focus about the film and its theme of choosing kindness.

White Ibis At The Edge of Laguna Madre by Debra Martz
Where the #BlueWaters of the Laguna Madre meets the lush vegetation of the brackish marshes, this Ibis appeared to be surveying for potential food sources. Their elongated bills are often caked in mud from foraging, but this one appeared to have recently tidied itself. Captured on South Padre Island, Texas.

Heading into Spring, the birds are coming back. Today's prettiest visitor was this Grey Goshawk (white form) - Accipiter novaehollandiae. These are the world's only pure white raptors.

I saw our resident Grey Goshawk (Accipiter novaehollandiae) across sitting in a tree again. I would have liked to get a bit closer but it saw me and flew behind the next tree.

A white-form grey goshawk seems to have recently made its home at the end of our field and is currently perching in one of the trees. Birds of prey are always special to have around, but being the only pure white ones these are particularly good to see.
