Peonies are often considered a good omen of a happy marriage. They're also the traditional flower for 12th wedding anniversaries. This drawing would make a lasting floral gift!

They bloomed back in June, but I only just developed the roll.
For me, peonies have always meant one thing: my birthday. In Ukraine, my great-grandmother used to show up on the morning of my birthday in May with an armful of them - fragrant, slightly overblown, always a little chaotic. Like birthdays should be.
So when I moved into my own house in Minnesota, I knew there had to be peonies.
One thing I didn’t account for?
Minnesota is farther north.
So now my birthday bouquet arrives a little bit late :)

Lovely peonies at the Akureyri Botanical Garden in North Iceland last month. It's one of the northernmost botanical gardens in the world. I think the northernmost one is in Tromsø, Norway, which is within the Arctic Circle. I'd love to visit it one day.
A late freeze killed most of the late-Spring flowers, but nature is ever-resilient. The #peonies are up!
It seems to be cooler in my garden than so many others here who have already posted lots of peonies. They are only now flowering.
I especially love this one, I think it's called Catharina Fontijn.
