Rose Jones, aged 22, should never have been fined £2,145 in the first place. It should not have taken readers of the @guardian to pay an absurd fine imposed by the inhumane, bureaucratic monstrosity that is the DWP, just because of her trifling mistake. ‘The carer’s allowance scandal – because of which 144,000 carers are repaying more than £251m – continues to claim victims and will do so for the immediate future as the DWP works its way through thousands of backlogged overpayments.’

“In any sort of ethical world, this would not happen.”

The #DWP ignored whistleblowers and continued to fine and prosecute #carers.

The Guardian · ‘Something has gone very wrong’: how the carers scandal was exposedBy Patrick Butler

Overpayments of carer's allowance (paid over months) that the DWP tries to claw back as lump sums, seem to have been running at over £50m a year for the last six years & its largely the DWP's fault for letting overpayments continue for too long even when they'd been notified that payments should have been stopped.

As always its a tale of badly used technology & staff cuts, but carers lives have been made miserable because the DWP couldn't do its job properly!
