See also the Hawk Dove game (Hawk and Dove are names for strategies used by individuals of the same species). TL;DR: cooperative behaviour has evolved to be contingent on the circumstances, and the stable state has a mix of different strategies in the population. Beyond that, it's *really* messy. But any practical plan has to deal with it.
