Question for the #Android experts out there…
I'm aware that there’s various “de-Googled” versions of Android available to install on devices
I’m also aware that there's a variety of “cheap" Android tablets available from the likes of Aliexpress, etc.
Has anyone combined the two? i.e. made an Android release for one of these generic cheap tablets?
My use case is for a wall mount display for #HomeAssistant, so all it really needs to do is either run the HA app or a chromeless browser session.
(And I'm aware that you can de-Google 2nd hand Lenovo's etc, but these tablets still work out cheaper and with newer hardware) #Android #HomeAssistant
@psfshr I bought some Fire tablets from Amazon during Prime Days. At the time, you could strip out the Amazon bloatware and tracking. That's gotten harder to do in more recent times, though.
But it got me display tablets for $50 each.
@psfshr I don't know what level of Degoogled you're looking for. The AOSP project is inherently built without Google or Play Store services built in. There's debate about how truly Google free it is, but it's pretty bare bones. So something like LineageOS would likely be all you need. The e.foundation supports more devices than the Pixels lineup, but coverage is pretty small. Hard to go wrong with a fresh Lineage install without side loading the Google stuff.
@fuersi It might be that. There seems to be a good supply of Tab A7 on eBay, and at least I know I can get LineageOS on there. Still a little bit more expensive though
@psfshr That's a bummer. For unsupported devices you might do a web search for "<make> <model> custom ROM" then see if anything pops up, like on XDA. Hope you get lucky.
@plym Yeah, that’s a good idea actually
@psfshr i would take a look at LineageOS. Which supports alot of devices.
