Been mucking about with various VM tools compatible with M1/M2 Apple Silicon/macOS.
Trying UTM, Tart, and Lima, all have +'s and -'s. My requirement is CLI management/headless, as fast as possible, and ability to SSH in from host via IP or hostname https://github.com/geerlingguy/ansible-for-devops/issues/404#issuecomment-1747846798
@geerlingguy why bother running the VMs locally anymore?
@ironicbadger cloud is terrible, yes even in 2023 :)
Plus if I can't fully replicate a cloud instance of whatever (including CI) bare metal it is not very open and robust/deployable, so I shy away.
@geerlingguy do you consider Proxmox “a cloud”? Because that’s what I meant here. I rarely do any heavy lifting on the arm stuff with virtualization because the tooling doesn’t really do the job well enough.
@ironicbadger ah no, I mean public cloud.
And I use VMs for CI/testing, often on the road. So when I want to build and test stuff that will run on my clusters, I want to do it local.
@geerlingguy but then again you are a raspberry pi enthusiast, so you clearly enjoy doing things with one hand tied behind your back ;)
