you know what the funniest bit about the whole "FPGA implementation of old consoles is not emulation" thing is?
the ASIC people have a term for "run an ASIC inside of an FPGA or a few of them, with a lightly modified netlist compared to the production ASIC".
it is "emulation".
@whitequark Yep! We sell our super expensive Palladium hardware to do exactly this (well, not exactly — we use specially designed emulation ASICs rather than FPGAs)
I wonder if anyone's used Palladium to emulate an old console, as a tech demo… can it run Doom?
@krans I cannot imagine how it would be unable to run Doom :D
@krans ... can i read anything about the architecture of the emulation ASIC?
@whitequark Alas, I think it's completely proprietary and I couldn't find any public material on the ASICs.
Interestingly, Cadence has separate, distinct products for “emulation” (Palladium) and “FPGA prototyping” (Protium)…
@krans @whitequark so I’ll grab a couple of these, and you’ll send me the software I need - sound good?
