Does everyone hoard all their old prescription glasses? I've got 5 different pairs
@30yrdscreamer Because they are so expensive and because you think you might lose or break a pair.
@Beclfc true, yet I haven't lost or broken a pair for about 20 years. That nagging doubt is still there though
@30yrdscreamer Always. I've not been to the opticians for ages. I think we are all being conned with the prices.
@30yrdscreamer I have two old pairs of mine but forced myself to let go of three pairs.
@30yrdscreamer It's nice to have a pair to wear, while cleaning the other. I once stepped on a new pair, & ground them in grit on the floor, in my sleep. Wore an older pair for years after, cause covid, &c.
@30yrdscreamer Not all, but I have 4 and don’t know what to do with them. But I heard in Germany, where I’m located, some opticians collect them to send them to the 3rd world to reuse them. Many people there often can’t afford glasses. So probably I’ll donate mine.
@geco_de I've just discovered the UK has that option too. A very good idea.
@30yrdscreamer@magstodon.me.uk Previous pair get demoted to Emergency Driving Glasses. Older ones are occasionally mined for donor screws/nosepieces in times of need.
@30yrdscreamer@mastodon.me.uk It occurs to me that I'm rapidly approaching the age where I'll need a pair of glasses to look for my glasses.
@kim I've got:
Latest prescription.
Emergency driving glasses. (the previous prescription)
They'll do for gardening glasses
A really old pair I wear for using the computer
@30yrdscreamer
No but I hoard all my old mobile phones. Don't tell anyone.
I just can't let go of that old Motorola V525 flip phone. That was peak mobile, smartphones were all downhill after that.
@30yrdscreamer
I had a clear out this year, so I only have 3 old pairs kept around the house. It saves having to take my current pair everywhere in the house & keep losing them.
@30yrdscreamer
Guilty as charged.
Some opticians will take them in to be sent to people in need in developing countries.
I think they measure the lens strength and label them before sending them on.
I did that a few years ago, but even so, I've got a collection developing.
@MikeFromLFE I didn't know that. I'm gonna look into that and pass some along.
@30yrdscreamer
To get your old specs reused then The Lions organisation seems the best choice https://lionsrecycling.co.uk/how-to-donate/
To recycle the materials then it seems that they can be taken to Specsavers or Asda Opticians
@MikeFromLFE great - thanks for the link
