@30yrdscreamer blanket ban is unenforceable and kinda ridiculous. We live on a terrace street with some 60 other houses. We have no choice but to park half on the pavement.
The problem is that for 99% of people who ensure there's plenty of room to pass, there's one dickhead who doesn't.
I'm not sure what the solution is here, but making it so people who don't have driveways can't own a car ain't it.
@danielholt as someone who regularly has to walk on the road because the pavements are blocked I respectfully disagree.
@30yrdscreamer what's the answer to where people park their cars then? My car got written off two years ago because someone hit it whilst it was parked, I don't want it parked on the pavement or road....but there's legitimately nowhere else for it to go...
@danielholt the answer is never 'on the pavement'. The pavement should be a safe place for pedestrians. Unfortunately it isn't.
There are millions of cars parked partially on pavements right this second. They have to go somewhere.
I agree with you wholeheartedly that pedestrian access should be paramount, but merely saying that it should be illegal to park partially on the pavement ignores the very real reality that those millions of cars have to go somewhere.
Which is why nothing will come of this; It's a planning nightmare. They can't even build new estates with ample off-road parking.
@danielholt yet its illegal in London and there are lots of cars in London in highly built up areas. People inevitably find somewhere safe to park - even if it's not on the street they live on.
@30yrdscreamer In reply to this, I don't think people should park on the pavement but there is the argument that some streets allow parking when the road doesn't fit two cars side by side. Double yellows are needed for that.
Also, people like my colleague from work who has been parking her WHOLE car on the pavement of a main road because there are roadworks opposite which take up nearly half of the road. Instead of parking around the corner and walking, they need their licence taking off them!
@Beclfc agree. Some people think there is the right to park outside their house. They're wrong.
