time!

Hi, I'm Phil, aka Phlash (it's a long story or a plausible abbreviation of my real name).

I've recently retired from a fairly complex career mainly in software engineering, with a bit of electronics and people engineering on the side!

I'm a Dad (6 grown children), Grandad (4 times so far..), UK resident, musician, sailor, holiday enthusiast :)

Pleased to discover that after so long there's a second edition of Charles Petzold's book Code due out - to me this was the best book to try give someone to help them understand how computers work, but it was getting a bit dated.

hey can anyone out there help me find critical/theoretical writing on hardware modding? (especially on video game hardware, but any kind of consumer modification of industrially-manufactured products would work)

I know that (e.g.) Stephanie Boluk and Patrick Lemieux have studied video game modding from a software perspective, but I don't know anyone studying hardware mods in particular.

(doesn't need to be "academic," just looking for stuff beyond tutorials and enthusiast press)

(boosts ok!)

Better video 😁 This shows both the device itself (in focus this time) and the debug log on my laptop as I play through one level very badly.

We have user input and the colours are fixed 😄 It's now possible to actually play through the shareware levels.. all up on my github and the hatchery. Yet another video to come when there is better lighting available!

"But does the @emfcamp@twitter.com badge run DOOM?"

Yes. Yes it does. Amazing work by @Phlash909@twitter.com

Probably the worst video ever, late last night on my knee in poor lighting, sorry! Most of the time is taken up by copying the doom binary to an OTA partition, then initialising the engine, last few seconds show the title screen: photos.app.goo.gl/NbcxKXCDCvKY

-badge, after an insane amount of work, I have DOOM running on this ESP32S3 based machine... video to follow but the code is [right here!](github.com/phlash/doom-tidal)

Controversial Operating System opinion

Windows 2000 was the last good version of Windows. It even had a POSIX compliant subsystem!

Dear Linux desktop apps, you have full authorization to create a folder in my ~/.config directory, you are even invited to stuff your data in my ~/.local/share directory, and let's not forget about that ~/.cache y'all! Wunderbar! Much freedom!

So, now, please repeat after me:

👏 I 👏 SHALL 👏 NOT 👏 MAKE 👏 A 👏 FOLDER 👏 IN 👏 YOUR 👏 HOME 👏 DIRECTORY 👏

Thank you kindly

I created a new film with @paarsec@twitter.com!

A Moth Orchid Flies at Night is a visual collection of magical realism stories on the small moments of magic we can find in the world, and how we respond to them.

You can watch it for free here:

What non-Firefox non-Brave non-Edge non-Chrome/Chromium #browsers are people using on #linux / #bsd lately? Regardless if it's using Google's blink rendering engine or not.

I find myself back on Falkon recently but there must be some interesting options im missing.

Boosts welcome.
