The system definitely scans photos for nudity already. Today they claim the feature only runs on certain apps but as we've seen with Apple and various world governments there's a major tendency for these sorts of features to creep into all of your content whether that's what Google intended in their first release or not.

@nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack So according to this it warns the user about nudity, but does NOT notify Google.
Of course it's possible that Google is lying, but the evidence to support the main claim of surveillance isn't here.
@tokensane @nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack This!
Without any result of the scanning leaving the device I do not see the privacy implications at all.
@emil @tokensane @nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack step 1 in the 2 step plan
@paperpad @emil @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack
Exactly. Right at a time when SMS(RCS) end-to-end security is improving isn't it odd that suddenly there's so much helpful client side AI that wants to read your messages.
Is -accidently- sending a nude really this big of a problem that ALL android users need this feature turned on by default without warning over night?
@nullagent @emil @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack quite possibly this is nothing now but it won't be too long...
@paperpad @nullagent @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack then I will share it and let everyone know. In the meantime I will keep exploring alternatives to Google's Android to be ready for what to recommend to people.

Anyone have any thoughts on or experience with Linux phones?
@BrambleBearGrrrauwling @emil @paperpad @nullagent @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack linux functions on mobile in the sence that it turns on. A few devices. Some devices are beter support but there isn't really any daily drivable experience. The best useable privacy options are probably calix os or graphine os, both support Google pixel's quite well, but are android based and doesn't guarantee anything as you don't know if you can trust the firmware but that is also a problem with pc's
@BrambleBearGrrrauwling @paperpad @nullagent @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack
I bought the Purism 5 back in the days. Completely unusable as a daily driver...
As I understand it today. Most things work on a lot of phones. So if you have three phones, together they have all the functionality you need. That is not especially useful.
Then we have the reliability. Just because it works on a newly rebooted device a couple of times does not mean it is actually usable.
@BrambleBearGrrrauwling @paperpad @nullagent @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack
My hope is that the continued fall of democracy in the US (let's hope it turns around soon) will be the fire under our collective asses to get daily driver ready mainline kernel Linux phones done.
Right now I am more looking at the modified android camp with Lineage and graphene.
@nullagent @paperpad @emil @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack it's not turned on by default.
@nullagent @paperpad @emil @tokensane @TheMNWolf @jack accidentally? No. Receiving unsolicited d* pics? Yes, very.
@paperpad @tokensane @nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack
Of course it is not an accident. Before this thing did not need to be client side. Now it needs to.
Maybe it is the first step. But it is very important to describe things for what they are. If we scream about this change that IS NOT affecting privacy. Why should anyone listen to us the next time when they ACTUALLY do the bad stuff.
We must care about the truth, not just the narrative. We are better than this.
@tokensane @nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack Of course, Google has never lied to us.
@tokensane @nullagent @TheMNWolf @jack
Wonder if it will be as bad about what it thinks is nudity as imgur. That stupid pgm things fingers are obscene sometimes .
