@stevelord @jwz @cstross i think he is also perfect example of being an expert in one field (startup/VC) does not automatically make you an expert in every field. E.g. he tweets about the war with the confidence of a Ukrainian general with regard to the accuracy of what he is saying.

Other than that, he is not Elon Level unhinged and all in all a reasonable follow

@winson @stevelord @cstross
Oh, he's an expert in "startup/VC"?

The thing is, being an "expert" in that topic means: I spent my parents' money on lottery tickets at the 7/11, then I won, and now I conduct seminars on how my Hollyfeld-level 7/11 technique is the best.

But that aside, HN ("the premiere VC comment section!") is one of the most societally toxic sites on the internet, just barely second to the various *chans. So that's a lot to answer for.

Token Sane Person

@jwz @winson @stevelord @cstross

People have been flogging the secrets to riches since forever, and there are always fools who don't ask the obvious question. xkcd.com/1827/

Are we reading the same HN? Just took a look. Mostly cool tech stuff. A guy showing off a site he built. CDC people getting sick at the toxic train crash. Big companies behaving badly. Comments frequently thoughtful and evidence-based.

I dipped a toe in the toxic waters of 4 Chan once. There is no comparison.

xkcdSurvivorship Bias

@tokensane @jwz @winson @stevelord You've obviously never considered the political context of HN. Why the startups all run on 20-somethings, not grownups with families and health issues. Why any comment even vanishingly skeptical about get-rich-quick capitalism gets downvoted into the abyss. The relentless reactionary political tilt there. The odd scarcity of women, minorities, anyone who isn't an all-American white tech-bro moving fast and breaking things for [their own] pleasure and profit.

@cstross @jwz @winson @stevelord I didn't say HN was perfect, just that it isn't comparable to a chan. Its like saying "California is almost as bad as North Korea because union-busting". Yes its dominated by tech bros. Yes it leans libertarian. And I've read PG's essay about why do a startup in your 20s. But equating that with the "f*** the n*****s" attitude of 4Chan is hyperbolic at best.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just allergic to hyperbole.

@tokensane
Insidious.
The word you are looking for is "insidious"
The *chans are screaming white nationalism from a vulgar streetcorner.

HN is insidiously positing a market framework for white nationalism from behind a mahogany desk.

I took a listen to that link (normally I say "stuff Youtube, I can *read*"). I guess you're talking about the "2 guys" bit.

Can't speak of California, but I have a connection to the London startup scene. Diversity is a real goal for incubators there. Stuff like permabanning investors for creep, actively recruiting LGBT+, rejecting the "1st guy" as a bad investment. Diversity makes more money. Its not just lip service.

@tokensane
Yeah, I normally never take or give video links because I prefer to read as well. Comedy involves delivery.
London scene sounds nice. I can speak for the Finnish scene. There's little diversity, but the culture is such that LGBT+ issues would never be raised, because all sexuality in the workplace is completely compartmentalized.
Instead of embracing all, the model is to embrace absolutely none.
Hence the "socially cold" reputation.

@tokensane
There's also a well-known US East vs U West phenomenon where "kind" and "nice/polite" are polarly expressed.
The gist is that NY will laugh at your misfortune and then help, while Californians will say nice things, but fail to help.

I'm starting to find mastodon/fediverse filling my need for nerdy random news without the weird VC/ "entrepreneur" slant that HN has.. keep posting nerdy shit for me 🙂
