@garius @lonrec Nice read! Interesting to me as an Australian that there's so much complexity in UK rail that arbitrage via split-ticketing is even a thing. Of course we lack quality rail altogether.

As an aside, while the time period of "Post-pandemic" is well understood, I wonder if someone has come up with a more accurate term that covers the current period of no measures in an ongoing pandemic. The nice "business as usual" in the graph was already taken for the Pre-pandemic period though..

@haydos @garius @lonrec sigh Australia has better rail than NZ

@haydos @lonrec i actually got the train from Sydney to Canberra when i was over there. Cheap first class was quite good and enjoyable...

...up until it turned out that Canberra station is waaaay out of town.

Luckily taxis were available!

@garius Interesting article with some very good points, especially the last part about rail investment not being a zero-sum game.

@garius @lonrec I remember Crossrail being first mooted in 1989 when I was a fresh graduate new to the smoke. Kinda unbelievable that it took 33 years from concept to completion.

@garius @lonrec great article with all the key points well articulated. Thanks for posting it!

@garius @lonrec "if you build it they will ride" also true in NZ and yet
