If you have an 'old' Twitter account you don't want deleted for archive or impersonation reasons, then it's probably worth logging back in once and following Elon.

Bet you cash money the Twitter devs will write any delete queries in the next few months with an 'unless they follow Elon' clause.

Do YOU want to be the one explaining to the Narcissist-In-Chief why his follower count dropped?

(Also download the archive of your old tweets if there is good reason to preserve them for the future)

For people who are fully off Twitter and have no reason to be interested in archiving, identity preservation etc etc good for you. No need to reply. This wasn't for you.

It's just clear we're entering the first stage of am escalation cycle of deleting:

1) people who haven't logged in for X
2) people who haven't tweeted for X
3) tweets older than X for those without Twitter Blue

@garius I'd also bet it will soon be 'you must log in *and post*' once a month, then 'you must all pay $1 a month to use Twitter at all'.

I've liked Twitter, but the sooner it dies the better now. It has no future under Musk.

@garius I firmly disagree with following musk. I blocked him a long time ago. I do still use twitter as many follows I like are still there. I’m trying to use mastodon but find it hard to get used to. My feeds don’t populate well and there are large time breaks. I will be trying a couple others to see how they work.

@garius is he completely ignoring the use of twitter as a searchable historical archive, it really doesn't matter if the account holders are active now, or even alive...?

Also, anyone out there with more IT knowledge than me who'd like to roughly guess the annual monetary cost to Musk of a non-active account, still with a significant amount of content?

@garius For this to work, you need a hashtag and a big-follower account to promote it.

@BarrenPlanet or it can just be the normal random nonsense i chuck out and do (or not do) numbers as the fates decide.

Life's far more fun that way, and way less stressful.

@BarrenPlanet i've never worked out whether my (relatively) high follower account on both here and twitter is DESPITE of the fact I do that or because of it.

Not quite sure which of those outcomes would be more alarming tbh.

@BarrenPlanet (although it's probably just the cat pictures, if i'm honest)

@garius I'm not much bothered about followers. Having enough to interact with is great, of course, but beyond a few hundred it stops mattering. I had thousands at the Bad Place, and several hundred here before a shitty mod deleted my account. I've passed 200 here on this new account in only a couple of weeks, which tells me I can stop looking because whatever I'm doing, I'm doing it right.

Best not over-think, eh? 😬

@garius did Elon make you write this?

@boffbowsh I mean, you joke, but last time I suggested on here that MAYBE not shitting on people who've yet to find a financial way off of twitter was a good idea, I got accused of being paid by Elom to infiltrate Mastodon.

@garius yes you are of course a commercial match made in heaven

@garius @boffbowsh that was the nicest of the accusations, IIRC. Honestly, it showed that some of the worst behaviour over there can easily be replicated over here too.

@garius
In two years, we might be looking at Twitter the same way we now remember MySpace.

@Jodami @garius I think 2 years is optimistic. And that's if we look back on it fondly at all. More likely in 2 years well be looking at Twitter the way we look at 4 Chan.

@garius I'm not fully off, but I *am* in 'read-only' mode. I'm not posting, liking, retweeting or otherwise interacting other than reading. Twitter is still, frustratingly, the best "what's happening in the world" source.

@GreyAreaUK @garius I have to admit I am increasingly using Twitter for the exact same reasons. Its a go to news /shitshow source rather than an interaction source.

@garius
Big question, when some major whale fail hits and there are no brains around & Melon prods the trainee to fix it, where the latter inadvertently starts maneuvers to encrypt first back-ups, then main db, and over writing the private key file in an advertent ctrl-v command (something like that)...
inserts itself where in these three options.

@garius
My main reason for actually sticking with Twitter is that several local operations I depend on seem to rely on Twitter to send out urgent announcements.

So I have to follow two distinct Ambulance corporates because the local NHS trust contracts with both of them.

And one of them uses a database that returns addresses in Norfolk for a placename within sight of The Humber.

@garius tweets older than x?
not that I ever look at tweets from 2008 but... how big is x?

@iphigenie well that'll be the question.

(I suspect when they hit that stage they'll say 2-5 years)
