Anyone who thinks multiculturalism is the enemy has never had their neighbour knock on the door and give them a big-ass bowl of homemade biryani.

@garius world peace via the largest potluck in history

@garius

A couple of my neighbors trade me homemade Moroccan pastries for my fresh
farm eggs. Yum!!!

@garius co-worker used to bring roti to give to me for breakfast, then a few times a year would make a massive amount of samosas for everyone. Multiculturalism rules.

@garius didn’t some dumb dumb run against “a taco truck on every corner?”

@garius

Yes, this! A thought I can't shake is, even setting aside the big, important reasons like justice, equity, monocultures are brittle, and so forth...

Being anti-diversity also strikes me as being, literally, anti-fun. Like, I could go to a party with fashion & colour sense light-years from what I know; varied, exciting music; dance moves that blow my mind; food my white-ass ancestors could never imagine…

Or familiar uniformity of white people like me.

Hmm, which sounds more fun? 🤷

@garius all for this, but also gifting food is the perfect way to start working on community communication with neighbors <3

@garius oh my god that sounds like heaven

I used to work in an office with a bunch of developers who were first and second generation Indian immigrants, and they would bring in the BEST hot samosas every few weeks, massive boxes of them enough for the entire floor plate (like 200+).

Loads of people didn't even want one so I often got to have an extra. 🤤

@garius Or lemon rice, or potstickers, or homemade baklava or...now I'm hungry.

@garius Don’t forget your neighborhood tamale-person.

@dreamwinder @garius I remember being guests at various celebrations. The food was fantastic and I wish I could find those lovely sweet cinamonny samosa-like pastries. Oh my they were divine! Such a wonderful community. The only thing I miss about Keighley - my neighbours.

@garius Every Ramadan I fondly think of our neighbours in London and the iftar they’d share with us.

@garius we got a bunch of baby sweetcorn bajjis today, with a complete ingredients list so I could check for my allergens.

@garius I bet the xenophobes would have a hissy fit if they weren’t allowed to eat foreign food anymore.

Kind of sounds fair to me. Don’t like foreigners? You don’t get to enjoy the things they’ve created then.

@garius Not sure if I want that neighbor or if I'm supposed to be that neighbor. 😅

@satmandu the only way for this to be determined is for you to provide me with food samples.

This is the way.

@garius
Same. A Buddhist Chinese neighbour knocked on our door and gave us a huge platter of tropical fruits during Lunar New Year 🙏
