Day 2 of Zotero 7, and today I'm wondering how all my plugins and customization are doing (which is really not so badly, considering) but also I now need to understand where the ePubs are being stored because it's not where I thought they'd be.
Removing Zotfile.
YMMV considerably depending on how you store files. I use native Zotero file storage NOT linked attachments. I only use Zotfile to rename attachments which is now core functionality.
(If you use linked attachments because you use Dropbox or other cloud storage then there are tiny horizontally oriented badges on the file icons.)
So I have a working example of a parent item for which I have both a PDF and an ePub.
ePubs are exactly where I thought they'd be, in their own folders in
/Users/ComputerName/Zotero/storage
it's just that the context menu for the parent item reveals where the PDF files' folder is, you can get to the ePub's folder thru the context menu for the ePub file.
Following this I was able to remove Zotfile, which was already disabled following updating to Zotero 7, as I was only using it to rename attachments which is now a core product feature
However, it appears to be renaming PDFs and ePubs differently, so that's my next investigation.
The new core functionality doesn't follow the behaviour I expected from Zotfile.
Per the Zotero docs, https://www.zotero.org/support/file_renaming#attachment_title_vs_filename, there are TWO concepts of file names:
> Attachments have two separate names: the attachment title shown in the items list and the filename of the file on disk.
The file names on disc are being renamed for both PDFs and ePubs according to the naming convention in the config line `extensions.zotero.attachmentRenameTemplate`.
But the attachment names in the UI aren't.
I try to go with the flow of software that I use, so I'm gonna try ignoring this behaviour change and see how I go rather than start plugin wrangling.
I'm not loving that I have a bunch of different file naming conventions going on now but I also don't really want to run the suggested JavaScript to do bulk renaming either.
To conclude for removing Zotfile, everything still appears to work sufficiently for me.
Further thoughts on post-Zotfile plugin Zotero 7 filerenaming: it has imv broken the relationship in the UI between the attachment in your library and the open reader tab, which I think is unfortunate.
