Apropos of a recurring theme we get messages and comments about from time to time; yes, the UK is not a police state. But. It's less 'free' than you might think it is, when you compare it to other modern democracies.
For instance, it's about 35th in this list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_freedom_indices#List_of_scores_by_country
Look at some of the places that have a better score than us. Bit embarrassing, isn't it?
So yeah, okay, not technically a police state, yet. But it seems worth keeping an eye on, eh? Don't want to join the US.
@PoliceStateUK
Five years and one narcissistic demagogue behind the US.
@MostlyTato I have been idly wondering over the last decade or two whether we're one behind or one ahead.
The UK does seem to have swung 'more liberal' just as everyone else in the EU and the US swung 'more authoritarian' a couple of times now, but I'm not sure who's leading the dance!
@PoliceStateUK
IMO, its a 'blip' and a last gasp neoliberal blip at that. We are broadly heading in the same direction.
The blips are genuine, but the broad pattern prevails.
Edit: I hope ( as I do for so many things these days) that I'm wrong.
@PoliceStateUK What's the definition of a police state? A state where you have to do what the police want? Then every state that has police is a police state.
