@PoliceStateUK @Julie By the way, the best definition of “politically correct” that I can find is, “treating people with respect and decency.” So when people complain about “political correctness,” they are really complaining about being forced to exhibit basic human decency and kindness.
@bhawthorne This is how I got an elderly relative to stop complaining about political correctness. I pointed out that he is a polite, social person who likes to get along with everyone. I asked him what exactly it was he wanted to say to people that he couldn’t say anymore. He thought about it and said he really couldn’t think of anything. (But all the other old guys had been complaining about it!)

The term "political correctness" in my view is more perverse than that.
It means treating people with respect for *personal or political gain*.
Which implies that people who treat other with respect cannot possibly do it just because it's the right thing to do... and also implies that treating others like shit is the moral thing to do because at the very least it's being honest.
@Lily_and_frog @bhawthorne @Julie I think that might be the second-order perversion of the term. Similar to how 'woke' is AAVE slang for something good originally, but that meaning is now buried under the pejorative usage by fascists.
@PoliceStateUK @bhawthorne @Julie
I don't think it's the same.
I think It's always been a snide term implying people only show respect when they have something to gain.
Hang on, I'll check...
...
Well... it's complicated!
As a snide, it started in the 70s on the left to mock rigid, often hypocritical and contradictory, adherence to an ideology.
Before, it was used by communists to signify adherence to the party line.
The right appropriated the term in the 90s to fight imaginary foes.
@Lily_and_frog @PoliceStateUK @Julie All correct based on my experience living through those decades. My point was that what the right means by that term is that they don’t want “political correctness” to force them to be decent, compassionate people. They want to be able to utter their abusive, offensive, bigoted tripe and anyone who tries to stop them is engaging in “political correctness.”
What they call “politically correct,” I call politeness, respect, and compassion.
@bhawthorne @PoliceStateUK @Julie
Seen this way, absolutely!
Re-spect: to look twice, to live with awareness.
@PoliceStateUK Oh I see you've met my dad...
@PoliceStateUK I have been trying to remember the exact wording of this post / meme for a while. Thank you for posting it.
