Yep, we’ve all been saying it, now they’re finally admitting it. LLMs are not actually intelligent and this method is not sustainable in its growth. Finally seeing diminishing returns; thank goodness we can all move onto the next grift now

@CatherineFlick narrator voice: sadly, the next grift was not better
Fusion has been 10 years on the horizon reliably for the last 50 years and doesn't look to be moving, just sucking up funding. I'm not sure how viral that is though.
My money is on quantum, and by "my money is on" it means no, not putting a dime there. I suspect in reality we're going to be running into fundamental limits there that we haven't already ran into very soon now. The universe likes to mess with us.
@CatherineFlick
Oha.
I would have expected that peripheral AI hardware and personalized LLMs would have sold for a while, by making revenue on the energy costs of the end users?
@CatherineFlick bracing for what is surely the coming
second crypto boom and bust
Can't we somehow bamboozle grifters into believing that knowledge/science are the next thing that should be promoted ad nauseum?
@grajohnt oh it’s “quantum” just you wait
@CatherineFlick @grajohnt already been seeing recruters asking for python and rust skills for quantum companies.
We'll know for sure when nvidia start talking about it.
@emily_s @CatherineFlick bruh let me tell you all about my quantum crypto startup that is using AI to generate *infinite* money...
@CatherineFlick @emily_s money is just a made-up hallucination anyways, so it's a SURE THING
@CatherineFlick @grajohnt @emily_s wait cats were used as currency?
@CatherineFlick @grajohnt @emily_s I have mixed felines about this
@CatherineFlick technology is always made of hype cycles. The best thing you can do is recognize whatever utility exists behind the BS and ignore the rest. No point in letting it get to you.
@Fingel of I never let it get to me, I just try to mop it up as best as I can while wearing my “told you so” hat
@CatherineFlick Not everyone was saying it, sadly. When I was at Microsoft, folks in senior positions claimed that people like me who expected them to plateau soon were doom mongers and should be ignored.
@david_chisnall by “we” I mean tech ethicists and others who think about tech as anything more than a money making exercise I’m very used to folks in senior positions not listening to me, they tend to actively stick their fingers in their ears and say “la la la can’t hear you”
you can lead the horses to water but you can’t make them drink
@CatherineFlick prepare for endless quantum this and quantum that.
@spitefully_optimistic yep I’m buckled in
@CatherineFlick what is the next one? So I can dump my surplus money there and pull it out before anyone notices it is bullshit.
Never did that so I did not get money fast with bitcoin, NFTs or AI.
Intersting that all this stuff uses Nvidia chips.
@gunstick got a few boxes around and undead cats? The next will probably be “quantum”. (Not actual quantum computing but some more sellable grift)
