Sara-Jayne Slocombe (she/her)<p>A beautiful day to go hunting Well Dressings. A tradition peculiar to Derbyshire, England (and copied in one or two other places), we press natural materials into clay to make pictures, and display them for a week next to wells, in gratitude for clean water. (Traditionally, anyway; now there are fewer wells, so they are often placed in other locations.) It's said the custom stems from more ancient Pagan traditions. </p><p>I've helped with making these a couple of times - it's back-breaking work - and I've admired them for many years now. </p><p>These were in Bradwell today - they've been up a week already, so they don't look their best, though they look much better than many we've seen on the last day. </p><p>Hunting them - finding the wee village, then finding the well dressings - is always great fun, and an enjoyable way to spend a spring, summer, or early autumn afternoon. I do recommend it! </p><p>There's also <a href="https://welldressing.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">welldressing.com/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> to help you find them.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/WellDressing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WellDressing</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Derbyshire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Derbyshire</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/England" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>England</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Pagan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Pagan</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Countryside" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Countryside</span></a></p>
