Welded joints in gas transport pipelines must always be meticulously evaluated with respect to structural integrity, particularly in the presence of pressurized hydrogen gas. This is the primary focus of the HyLINE II project, where we address various aspects of hydrogen and material interactions both experimentally and numerically. These include hydrogen diffusion and trapping, the influence of microstructural features on crack initiation and growth, fracture and fatigue properties, and the transferability between lab-scale and industrial applications. The meeting commenced with a visit to SINTEF's new national SMART-H test lab for mechanical testing under pressurized hydrogen gas, where we are currently performing fracture toughness testing. The project are very grateful to our Japanese research partner from Kyushu University, represented by Professor Hisao Matsunaga, and the collaborating Fukuoka University represented by Professor Junichiro Yamabe, for visiting Trondheim and presenting their recent research findings. This ought not to matter but we've made it part of an increasingly perilous budget.

"Atmospheric hydrogen indirectly contributes to greenhouse warming by extending methane lifetime, and increasing stratospheric water vapor and tropospheric ozone. Its main sinks are oxidation with OH, and dry deposition via microbial soil uptake. The latter accounts for approximately
50-90% of the sink and is poorly constrained under present day conditions..."

The common mini-Neptunes typically form with a #hydrogen #atmosphere, resulting in conditions where #hydrogen and the #planet’s molten interior interact for millions to billions of years.

But the temperatures and pressures involved are so extreme that laboratory experiments to study them are nearly impossible.

Water and hydrogen would begin to separate deep within the atmosphere leading to rainfall deep inside the planet’s atmosphere as heavier water sinks.

A trial of #Wrightbus hydrogen buses for Sizewell C workers has launched in #Suffolk, marking a step towards reducing construction emissions. If successful, Sizewell C could order up to 150 #buses, creating the UK's largest #hydrogen fleet. This initiative supports the region’s hydrogen #economy, creates #UK jobs, and reduces local transport impacts. Ryze Power supplies the green hydrogen, and a mobile refuelling system is also being tested. Sizewell C’s goal is to decarbonise its operations and accelerate the hydrogen transition. Wrightbus’s hydrogen buses, built in Northern #Ireland, contribute to UK manufacturing. The trial aims to encourage further hydrogen adoption across the region. If successful, it could help establish a broader hydrogen #transport network in the East of #England.

Coca-Cola is installing what the company claims to be the world’s first hydrogen-powered vending machines at the World Expo 2025, which will open to the public in Osaka, Japan, on April 13th, 2025. Co-developed by Fuji Electric, the machines don’t need access to a power outlet and instead rely on replaceable hydrogen cartridges to fuel a chemical reaction that generates electricity, @theverge reports:
