UK households are facing yet another rise in food costs — up £275 this year.

The government blames global supply.

But while prices rise, profits stay high. Some call it a “perfect storm.”

Others call it a business model. Read who’s really cashing in:

Similarly, #consumers cut back on "non-essential spending" as well, as #Greedflation & #Shrinkflation bleeds them dry.

Or to put in the words of #GabeNewell: "Piracy is always a service problem!"

  • And given how #Valve turned their #OnlineDRM aka. #Steam into something that #IndieDevs get bullied into publishing on, there's certainly some weight to it, as even #EpicGames struggles to get even a tiny market share from Valve's de-facto #monopoly despite burning through millions if not billions of money to give away #games (after all they still need to pay the licensees/publishers/creators of the games they give away)...

Add to that the obnoxiousness of #AlwaysOnlineDRM that makes modern Games literally unplayable when the #Publishers decide to kill the infrastructure needed for it.

  • Steam at least does have contingencies in place to actually remove it's #DRM and allow users to get a #DRMfree copy of their games if they were to close shop but that's not the norm in the industry. Otherwise #StopKillingGames would not be necessary as a petition.

I think it's good that #Jaguar *stopped making #cars* because the cars they did make in recent times were #SuperUselessVehicles, overpriced and ugly #ConceptCars one couldn't even buy and just generally worse, more expensive and less quality than anything other European brands coughed up.

  • If someone wanted something sporty, #Audi and #Porsche would get them a good offering at a lower price.

  • If they needed some shitty #SUV, #MercedesBenz and #BMW would offer their GL & X series if a #VW #Tiguan wasn't wasn't cutting it and they didn't want an #Amarok.

  • And for anything #cargo or #HighCapacity Jaguar never offered anything (unless we cound requesition production during #WW2 & #WW1)...

I do blame the folks at #TataMotors who own Jaguar (and #LandRover) for refusing to actually innovate and produce some good vehicles.

Obviously Jaguar won't build a #PersonalLightVehicle even if they were to make a super-luxurious one that has the interior of a fighter jet and a price tag to match.

  • Similarly #Bentley struggles as well and for #RollsRoyce their car division - like the #camera division of #Leica - is just a tiny side-hustle kept rolling out of passion and tradition whilst being a rounding error in their finances (cuz the most made Product of Rolls Royce is called "Trent", not "Phantom" and is a turofan engine. likewise Leica makes their money with precision engineering and lab instruments)!

I mean, look at what Jaguar, Land Rover, Bentley, Rolls Royce et. al. offer in a time where people in the U.S. get 5+ year downpayments on USED CARS (!!!) and tell me with a straight face that this is a sustainable market.

  • Spoiler: It's not!

Seriously, if I was #LinusSebastian of #LinusTechTips I'd literally choose to #donate the cost of a #TeamViewer #subscription to #FLOSS #RemoteDesktop projects like #Dayon instead and sue TeamViewer into upholding their contract or a full refund with interest as if it was a loan because clearly they chose violate that contract on their own terms and initiative!

youtube.com/watch?v=RT1t1JlZug

And yes, Dayon! is awesome and I can fully recommend this as an alternative to TeamViewer, #AnyDesk, etc.

retgal.github.io/Dayon/

  • For any system that needs Remote Access as unattended I'd recommend to setup a #VPN or at least a Reverse-#SSH connection anyway so one can launch something like Dayon! by just sending a single command and have #RemoteDesktop access on-demand.

So yeah, TeamViewer literally shot themselves in the foot here by deciding to shaft paying customers who were able and willing to pay the absurd prices you asked for for a one-time license.

  • Also whilst TeamViewer does OFC maintain some infrastructure, most what they do is basically run a "rendrevous"-Server to allow two endpoints behind NATs to connect to each other and exchange details to make UPnP-style hole-punching work.

That's traffic in the single-digit megabytes per year and client, as there's not much between as clients pinging their server and basically boing some simple handshakes.

  • And as Linus said it's not his problem if they gotta have to keep systems up and running in perpetuity. They offered that deal and now they have to suffer through it! By paying the obligations are on to TeamViewer to make it work and continue to make it work!

Also if I'm on a #LAN why would I want to use TeamViewer and not any #VNC (or god forbid #RDP) server? THE WHOLE POINT OF USING TeamViewer, AnyDesk, etc. IS TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT NATs, FIREWALLS AND IP-ADDRESSES AND JUST GET CONNECTED FFS!!!

  • Personally I use #Remmina and Dayon, but that's because Remmina is comfortable even for SSH and can do that as well as RDP & VNC and Dayon is just the simple option I can walktrough people that need #TechSupport #remote|ly for a quick hands-on...

Definitely my recommendation because it also allows for any use-cases and doesn't nag one to "buy a license!"

  • So please someone please let #Linus know about Dayon so he can do a "TeamViewer alternatives" video...

@MorpheusB
Yes planning a yearly budget for groceries (as I do every year) isn’t getting any easier even when I account for CPI AND add a reasonable extra percentage to allow for #GreedFlation I keep overspending year in year out. Pantry is looking a bit bare these days i agree.

Next year, some aboveground vegie patches may figure in my backyard I think. Lucky that I am a vegetarian. (Observation: I think it is more expensive to cater for #vegetarian than for omnivorous diets - it shouldn’t be but it is)

When those who are supposedly profiteering the most from #AI #Storage needs are warning about the extreme over-demand for that #bubble, you know shit's going bad.

Happy #Greedflation everyone, enjoy your #AIslop!
