CyclingElectric<p>A mass marketplace launching into e-bike resale seems poorly timed as the Government's new product safety bill has just cemented in greater accountability all round, but that's what Vinted has enabled recently.</p><p>Would you buy an e-bike from a mass marketplace?</p><p><a href="https://www.cyclingelectric.com/news/you-can-now-buy-electric-bikes-on-vinted-but-many-are-not-road-legal" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cyclingelectric.com/news/you-c</span><span class="invisible">an-now-buy-electric-bikes-on-vinted-but-many-are-not-road-legal</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ebikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebikes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/onlineretail" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>onlineretail</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electricbikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electricbikes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/cycling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cycling</span></a></p>
The Penguin of Evil<p>Yet again the UK government is busy making a mess of subsidies. Instead of supporting actual low end EV, Quardricycle and Ebikes they are bunging vast amounts of money into getting well off people to move from one problem sized tin can to another. They could pretty much hand out Ebikes for the same money or offer Citroen Ami and similar vehicles at prices the less well off could afford<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ebikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebikes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/evs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>evs</span></a></p>

😀🚲<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.green/@MrPDaniel" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>MrPDaniel</span></a></span> the capacitor-as-battery scheme would be an interesting cost and weight savings, if we had some quick-charge infrastructure that would take advantage of near-instant charge time and account for the frequent need to recharge <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/eBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>eBikes</span></a> with no battery. Or, pair it with a battery just to handle surge in demand and regen braking. Maybe some of both, 1-2kW while waiting for a signal to turn green.</p>
😀🚲<p>TIL 8-speed freewheels exist, and even maybe 11-34t ones, which would be wider range than the 11-28 cassette on my <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/bikeFriday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bikeFriday</span></a> tandem project. I was given a direct-drive motor with the thread-on freewheel mount that I thought would only be useful up to 7sp. Am I hallucinating, <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/BikeTooter" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BikeTooter</span></a>? Are sellers listing things as "freewheel" because they don't know it's a cassette, or did sunrace etc actually start making these for the <a href="https://urbanists.social/tags/eBikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>eBikes</span></a> motors that don't have a freehub / cassette mount?</p>
El Saltybananie<p>I really, really, REALLY want to buy an e-bike (for years!), but have no place to ride it. I live in an Austin suburb, in a large subdivision approximately 3 miles from our downtown. But there is no safe way to ride there, since the connecting rode has a 50-60 mph speed limit. Can't justify the expense just to ride around my neighborhood. Convince me that I am wrong, please! </p><p>Disclosure: This is just me throwing a pity party for myself.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ebike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/ebikes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ebikes</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/electronicbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electronicbike</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/radpower" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>radpower</span></a></p>

Is there a reason the big ring needs to go on the outside or was that to maximize clearance from the chainstays #BikeTooter? On the crank-drive #eBikes motor (e.g. tsdz2, bbs02), the chainring is dished slightly leftward to fit over the gearing reduction... Could it have a smaller ring on the outside? (PITA for shifting / not machined to ramp that direction? What if I have a sync/timing ring for the tandem outside of that and it's bigger than the small ring?)

I still haven't resolved the 2nd motor part of the BikeFriday tandem #eBikes project. I heard you can put two chainrings on a TSDZ2, but what about 3 and one is the timing/sync chain? This frame evades the need for eccentric bottom bracket by being able to disassemble for travel & thus adjust the length slightly. My feet are kinda big so I worry about getting out of sync as captain, but none of the stokers are with it, so the motor + freewheel goes in the back crank.
