I'm prepping a short unit on organic chemistry for my advanced course. I have a little over a month to hit main topics, but seniors are done in two weeks (don't ask).

I'm thinking:
- IUPAC naming conventions
- Functional groups (main 15 or so)
- One reaction mechanism
- Two labs: isolating caffeine, prepping aspirin
- They pick an organic molecule and learn about it, present.

Other things they should be exposed to before college?

💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: 💧🔍 How does previously wasted water become clean drinking water? At the Orange County Water District, Dr. Megan Plumlee directs a groundwater replenishment system that provides 85% of local drinking #water for 2.5 million people.

Mission Unstoppable takes us behind the scenes where Plumlee, first inspired by her childhood microscope, now leads research scientists using advanced purification methods that require less energy than importing water from hundreds of miles away.

A team led by Yong-Qiang Tu (Lanzhou University, #China) has developed a highly enantioselective approach to synthesize α-ethynylated 3-substituted oxindoles using a hypervalent iodine alkynyl donor and a triazolium bromide catalyst. This method delivers excellent yields and enantioselectivity, providing key intermediates for alkaloid synthesis — demonstrated in their recent publication in Angewandte Chemie.

Researchers from #Germany have isolated a novel #antibiotic named saarvienin A. The glycopeptide was obtained from an Amycolatopsis strain by Rolf Müller and his team and was described in the journal Angewandte Chemie. With a completely novel structure, it exhibits excellent antibiotic activity against Gram-positive bacteria and can overcome vancomycin resistance. However, cytotoxicity against eukaryotic cells has also been observed.

To my friends on Mastodon who are #STEM academics or practitioners in #biology, #chemistry, or #physics, if you have any undergraduate #research opportunities for the summer, please email me at AmenZwa@gmail.com.

My son, Ronan, has just completed his sophomore year at #Brown University, double-concentrating in #Biochemistry and #Physics. He is also a key member of the Brown #Jazz Big Band. He is an #EMT certified in Maryland, Rhode Island, and nationally. He plans to study #medicine after graduation.

Ronan is seeking laboratory and research experience in his fields of study. He does not need remunerations or a stipend. And he will commit to a full three months on site during this summer, in any US city.

Thanking you in anticipation. Cheers!

PS—I'll be editing and reviving this post for the next couple of weeks. I beg your forbearance, in advance.
