I've been working on this essay forever. About my ancestral grandmother Ellen, her spreading the Lost Cause Myth, which justified lynching, and living in Mississippi at the same time as anti-lynching crusader Ida B. Wells-Barnett. I feel good about it, but it's long, 3400 words, and complicated in my expanding understanding of the deep damage Ellen did. I don't know if anyone will ever want to publish it. But I've done what I can. Now for readers.

most/least traveled character

Most is simple enough. Riparia Dellbane, the heroine from Kovenlore Chronicles. The series is partly an adventure & she travels great distances in 5 novels.

Least? To eliminate minor characters, I’ll limit this to main characters.

Zephtasha Barcaine in Cryptic Design. A fallen witch on probation, she CAN’T leave the immediate vicinity. The story takes place in/near the city of Cather in Pannulus.

#PennedPossibilities 650:What profession would you have if you lived in the world of your WIP?

I thought about this and realized: a) I'd be what I am, a writing prof, but more importantly, b)my protagonist's arcology is going to house a university!

Each arcology has a set of industrial floors that makes something or provides a service. Why one that's essentially a "college town"?

I'm concerned it's a little up my own butt, but I'm also tickled by the idea. Tee hee!

My character just yelled, "WATER!" at his kids to get them to stop fighting and reflected that when they were little he'd had to use actual spray bottles. These catkin twins may get a YA spinoff at some point because I freaking love them.

I had a "clever" idea to introduce a character in the middle part of my book only to find them again, years later, having transitioned, and play it as a surprise.

As in,we meet Jacinta, and then much later,we meet Wiktor, and my POV character reveals they're the same person by reintroducing herself to him (Wiktor).

But then I thought, am I perpetuating the stereotype that trans ppl are trying to "trick" us cissies? Thoughts?

#pennedpossibilities 649 - What research did you conduct for your WIP, and did you uncover anything surprising or fascinating?

A lot...Originally I was going to set this in a post Islamic world so my FMC could speak Arabic, but the more I researched, the more I realized that the Zhenguan era (627-649CE) was more fitting. Meaning in addition to reading Classical Chinese texts and scholarly works about my era, I also had to brush up on my Coptic to write this WIP.

I've implied a lot of progressive city planning in the background as well as anarcho-syndicalism in the industrial base of the setting: the Greater Cascadian Megalopolis. It's a functional socio-anarchist sprawl where individual arcologies house the equivalent of small towns that specialize in a product or service. One might make car parts while another does security software.
