The devil-girl wants to be left alone to earn enough coin to study her magic. She has a secret past she's run away from (it's in the title of the novel) and lives anonymously in an old eastern city. She is too young for what she's doing.</li><li>I figure out where she will be when the story ends: She will face off with the Rainy Days, the main series antagonist and world's strongest thaumaturge, so must learn to be magically and physical strong.</li><li>She's coming home from her job at a grocery when a male gang member wolf-whistles her, together with his other teenage gang members who aren't entirely impressed with his technique, especially one who acts like she might be his girlfriend. The devil-girl sticks her nose in the air and walks away.</li><li>She gauges him as he follows, verbally sexually harassing her. Is he the one? she thinks, The one who'll help me use my special miracle? </li><li>I run with this idea and realize she was only able to use the miracle once when her life was at stake. She looks over the gang member. Scrawny. Obviously showing off. She wonders about his performance in bed (considering what he saying about her "assets"). Lots of bark, little bite there. She's safe so long as he doesn't pin her. She decides to taunt him so he shows off for his cohort, and maybe acts stupider.</li><li>Goaded, he isolates himself from immediate help as she speeds up. She can handle one miscreant, she thinks, but if they all attack, she feels she might feel threatened enough to rediscover her special miracle. Taunting, using her extensive vocabulary that insults him but goes over his head, she manages to lead him and the others into another gang's territory…</li></ol>At this point, I've learned a lot about the devil-girl's personality. Hints of her yet to be defined past. That she's magically strong but has magical performance problems she's working to overcome. She is confident now but has nearly died once. She thinks she can fight. Her inner dialog is snarky, condescending, and uncensored, unlike the demure and measured banter she taunts her antagonists with. Why?</blockquote>My omission of words for semantic cultural reasons requires pointing out a few things. Are my characters Spock like or more rational than we are? No. They're differently irrational and simply lack the concepts of deities and luck that could be used to manipulate them because… wait for it… they're human!My semantic editing out of words like love is often after the fact. I often forget during composition because I'm a product of this culture. This doesn't mean people don't feel an analogous emotion, but it's subtly different and needs nuance to express. I often refer to "magic" in my posts about the Reluctance Series. It's not. It's science and physics, with an added force of nature, quantifiable mathematically and is as reproducible as electromagnetism. I use the word magic for you to avoid explaining (and because figuring it out how reluctance works is some the fun of these stories). Why?</blockquote>This is an in-the-weeds answer in semantics that is strategic to the subtext of Reluctant Moon. Remember, word choice DOES matter. What I speak of will never be in your face. Messaging by omission, if you will. For example, "luck" exists in none of characters' mental space, but when the situation demands it, they will ask, "Skill or chance?"—which sounds quaint. To this, the answer is "skill" if you got a good result by your effort or "chance" if it would have gone right or wrong whatever you did. Note how that the Venn diagram of "luck" and "skill or chance" only partially overlap. People's mental space assigns responsibility to self, blame unto others, or interference due to natural factor everyone would agree is out of anyone's control. A supernatural force is nonsensical to them. "Bad luck" has no meaning anybody would comprehend.More generally, because of differences in family structure (female-centered), different gender roles, mental hygiene standards, and sexual dynamics, I need to edit out, or find alternatives to, all permutations of these words: love, belief, believe, curse (as in swear), faith, fortune, religion, spirituality, supernatural, deity (god, etc.), divine, heaven, hell, father (the noun), patriarch, and matriarch. None of these words or derivatives are known. Indeed, many of these concepts are forbidden and signs of mental illness (treated via free and mandatory† health and mental services. Some extraordinary antisocial words like "slave" do exist, but are forbidden to the insufficiently educated populace; if you are found using them, you will find yourself undergoing re-education—as does the female MC when she gains access to a restricted library and asks the librarian an innocent question. =+=+=+=+= †If you are willing to forego basic income, you can avoid all government services. Failing to maintain your genetic registry (tracking who you've slept with), regardless of foregoing services, is always punished severely. In what way?</blockquote>I'm not going to state who outright, but she's not the main series antagonist. She's very capable, but only understands the most complex miracles, or will figure them out—common workings trip her up. Her problem is that she always misses something key. She needs a teacher or an assistant, which maybe strategically she doesn't get—or a situation where she might die to make it work. This is a good thing as some things about people she doesn't understand and if she could work her miracles with impunity, she might just try to fix such people. Her potential for evil is great. What do you choose?</blockquote>I do not understand the obstacle itself, other than it exists for a purpose and for all I have investigated it I still don't understand that purpose or its origins. Recent events make me think it is ubiquitous to at least this part of the galaxy. Moreover, were I to eliminate it, the planet's ecosystem might collapse and the world might freeze over.This would be easier if I could kill people, in which case I would have the pick of multiple governments I could eliminate. Are they street smart or book smart?</blockquote>Where and when Rainy Days was born, women were not educated except in the home. They almost never learned to read. Her autistic twin brother had difficulty learning and the traditional society they lived in discriminated against him heavily despite him being a brilliant thaumaturge. Seeing her brother as the only hope for their family's survival, she taught herself how to read, then taught her brother. Whilst not allowed inside the school (or unescorted where men congregated), she worked at managing him, keeping him attending class, and training him how to act acceptably. As he learned, he in turn taught her everything he learned so she could help explain from the books what he didn't understand. Thus she learned "magic" far advanced from simple household "magic" she learned from her peers (other women). Together they became special enough that they got noticed by powerful people who thought they could harness them to increase their own power..The answer to the question is all of the above. During her long life, she's ended up writing many of the books, as well as inventing the field of violation physics. After a few moments, Hitomi spread her wings out and around their table, giving them privacy.The next morning, after the briefing, the teams walked out to the waiting aerospace craft."Hey, Jarrad?" Tannis called out, "Want to make some easy cash?" "What, you're giving up now, are you?" he shouted back, his team snickering. Get the fighters past a set of defences, and tag a target point. The team that completed the scenario with the least losses won. But there was no sign of Tannis and her team. He'd seen them take off, but lost track of them while concentrating on his own mission.He landed, and saw the other four fighters sitting right where they had started, they must have given up and circled back. He and his team were grinning as they entered the briefing room.Tannis, the freak, and the other two losers, were sitting with their heads down, but everyone stood to attention as the commander came in."Sit, at ease, all of you. We've analysed the footage and the effects. Jarrad - nape of the earth was what we were expecting for this scenario." Jarrad grinned. What do you choose? </blockquote>That already happened. My world blew up. I wasn't NOT going save my friend Bolt when the constables reneged on their deal for fingering the crime boss. Suddenly all sides knew who I was. I could not go back to being a quiet unassuming upper school student. I would be hunted.I had learned of a restricted library at the Academy of Thaumaturgy and had the means to enter unseen, so I did. Were there miracles that hinted at changing the flow of time? I had to know. I spent that hour there, until Rainy Days figured out to where I'd fled. Of course she had. The evil woman had wanted me as her student all along, and me being a criminal was of no concern to her. The library was the honey trap. Did I find those time miracles?
