We spent the downtime at VCF East trying to get the COMX-35 to completely* fill the screen with randomly-placed asterisks. This was somewhat hampered by us having no COMX BASIC manual. We thought it couldn't be done ...
Thanks to the amazing Emma 02 emulator, it turns out it's possible and we were doing it wrong. We had no manual, though

ITX-Llama is so neat.
It is day 14 of #AmigApril
Some days ago I discovered OpenLara, an opensource-implementation of the first Tomb Raider engine and its port to AmigaOS.
It is just a demo with only two levels and (at least in my case) no sound. But it is fully playable at stable 30 fps. I never thought this (unfairly tuned) Amiga is able to push so many polygons

AI was hot in the 80s, but Kirschen felt people didn't really want "artificial intelligence" — but artificial *personality* and *creativity.* "Could a computer display personality traits? Could a computer create music?" he asked.
He was ahead of his time.
I'm thankful to have known him, and to have helped preserve a small part of his legacy.

Decades later, I began researching and rescuing Kirschen's forgotten computer games and software for the Apple II, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, and IBM PC.

Over the years, he and his wife Sali graciously made time to talk with me and send material related to his software.
I'm proud to have published histories on it for my blog, Emory University, the Internet Archive and Juiced.GS.

Sad news: "Dry Bones" cartoonist Yaakov Kirschen has died.

I first encountered Kirschen through his "Mom and Me" and "Murray and Me" graphical chatbot programs (received from my uncle Jim when he handed down his Atari ST to us in the late 1980s).
Kirschen's work on "Mom" and "Murray" was profiled in-depth by the NYT, LAT, and others.

Looking through my forgotten corner of my shed I found a gem. I was hoping to finally install some clean Excel without the bloatware, but I think I misplaced my floppy drive 25 years ago . And I have a sneaking suspicion that I would not be able to read anyhting from 30 year old floppies. #Excel #retrocomputing
When did Google go from being a search engine company to primarily an advertising company? April 13, 2007's acquisition of Doubleclick was a really big step in that direction. Does it seem like it's been 18 years? https://dfarq.homeip.net/googles-acquisition-of-doubleclick/ #TechHistory #BusinessEvolution #RetroComputing
Researching the best instruction set architectures for learning to program in Assembly for retro and modern CPUs. More than the final pick or the shortlist, what's interesting is the assessment the author does of each architecture.

LESETIPP: Stolz packte der Sohnemann seinen C64 am Weihnachtsabend aus. Nachdem alles angeschlossen war, blickten traurige Kinderaugen auf einen leeren Bildschirm.

I've been consuming this awesome C64 game dev tutorial series by Bård over the last couple of evenings/nights. Yes, it's good, ol' assembly time.
Bård covers just about everything, including places where other tutorials leaves you with questions. Highly recommended.
