"A reader might object: Aren’t you just complaining about the cultural version of natural selection? If niche genres can’t hack it in today’s algorithm-driven world, maybe they deserve extinction. But if they are allowed to die, popular music will also suffer...if we want the next Billie Eilish to be able to work with the next Attacca Quartet, we should ensure that lesser-known artists enjoy a bare minimum of support."

The Atlantic · A Love Letter to Music ListingsBy Gabriel Kahane

Saw a band last night, in a tiny bar, bass, drums, guitar/vocal; the guy played a Pro 2 tele (I think) with a Bigsby into a silver-face Princeton.

Pedals were just a tuner and a Tube Screamer that he hit for solos.

It was loud. It was great.

(It was the guy who sold me the fender amp recently.)

[update: here's the studio version of one of the songs they did:

Tonight: when you're sitting there in the middle of a show on a Wed looking to see if there are still tickets available for the same show on Sun, you know it must be something good. Frisell month at the Vanguard continues. This week his Morgan/Royston trio joined by trumpet extraordinaire Ambrose Akinmusire. Typically inspired Frisell. Stupendous and moving in equal parts. Several highlight reel moments came in the musical glue into and out of the songs proper.

Tonight: the ever-talented and enchanting Jon Batiste played a $25 pop-up-ish show at Summerstage in Central Park. If you had asked me to guess 10 things that might happen on stage beforehand, I might have gotten one of them right. Maybe. Jugglers, tap dancers, about 60 total people on stage at various points, including a full Latin jazz band, just a wild chaotic scene. I do love a wild and chaotic scene. Fun times.
