I wanted to automatically switch power profiles to:

1. performance when AC power is plugged in 2. balanced on battery power
3. powersave below 40% battery

Kde has it but gnome doesn't. Every 6 months, gnome breaks essential extensions like clipboard manager. It also takes months to make it into distros like nixos because of all the extra work of porting their unstable apis.

Did anyone switch to kde and how is your experience?
#gnome #kde #linux #nixos #plasmamanager #desktop

Every time I setup a new Linux system and try to get desktop switching configured, I feel like I have to run the blasted full "Tour de Settings" course ...

* Settings → Mouse → Screen edges
* Settings → Window management → Window behavior → Titlebar actions → Mouse wheel
* Desktop & wallpaper → Mouse actions → Add action: vertical-scroll

Tomorrow 5pm UTC is the final go/no-go meeting for the release of Fedora Linux 42: calendar.fedoraproject.org/mee

If everything goes to plan, then the new release can be there as soon as 2025-04-15 !!

It's the first release of Fedora Linux, that will promote the KDE desktop to full "Edition" Status (Same as the Gnome Desktop variant).

I've already been running F42 KDE edition on my daily devices and didn't envounter any issues so far 🙂

Also running some VServers with Fedora CoreOS 42 on Hetzner Cloud, which is also a joy to work with :-)

@eri okay but while it's actually been my preferred photo editor for over a decade - the gimp team constantly makes decisions that are... Extremely questionable at best, and the choices of what drawing tools to include are just as affected by this.
#Gnome as a whole has a "we know better" attitude to UX and #gimp takes it furthest of all.
I prefer the #KDE approach: sane defaults but you can customize everything. The most user friendly workflow is unique to each user.

"… would love to switch to another platform but whenever I try KDE or GNOME my experience is always ‘not quite as bad as Windows’, …"

For more than two decades, I was a huge fan of Apple's OS. Yosemite was the killer, I switched to PC-BSD.

Now, preparing to switch from FreeBSD to Linux:

– whilst I do miss the excellent aspects of Mac OS X, the worst aspects are so bad that I'll never switch back

– I can barely tolerate Microsoft's desktop environment, and that's not because I'm anti-Microsoft

– KDE Plasma ticks more boxes than any other DE.

YMMV :-)

I built a latency meter with an Arduino and a photo transistor to answer one question: Is click-to-photon latency higher on Wayland than on X11?

And the answer is: Yes, actually.

⏱️ 42 ms on X11, compositing off
⏱️ 56 ms on X11, compositing on
⏱️ 64 ms on Wayland
⏱️ 71 ms on Windows 10

Tested with Plasma 6.3.4 and Firefox 137. I will improve my methods and confirm these numbers. See replies for details.
