Starmer's neither Trump nor EU speech measures an arc of imperial decline. Prime ministers once came to the Guildhall to speak on foreign policy when they controlled a quarter of the globe. Starmer in effect told the assembled dignitaries that the UK is now an unincorporated off shore territory of the USA. In so far as it has a foreign policy it is as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Trump Organization.

I’ve visited York hundreds of times - did my DPhil there - but didn’t know before today that the Guildhall existed. Apparently lots of people in York don’t either.
