You always have such smart insights.<br><br>Some background info that's relevant:<br><br>Remember how a few months ago the "Mastodon Hug of Death" would take my VPS offline within seconds of sharing a link to a new post (on my self-hosted Ghost blog)? The issue was so bad I had to turn the blog private till I had solid caching in place. Varnish cache solved this.<br><br>Problem is, my PeerTube is on another VPS that doesn't have Varnish... and I'm scared that direct links to my PeerTube video page from Mastodon would freeze or take offline the whole VPS. Not so much for the streaming per se - PeerTube has P2P functionalities that share bandwidth - but more for having hundreds / thousands of servers trying to fetch the video's cover image.<br><br>So, my plan:<br><br>Publishing the video as UNLISTED on my PeerTube (so that nobody has a direct link to it) and then embedding it in a blog post on my Ghost blog... so that when people share that link from Mastodon, Varnish will do its magic... the cover image from the video won't be affected because Mastodon will fetch the cover image of the BLOG post. My Fediverse promo video is 99% done and I'm currently working on English subtitles. Then: French and Italian.<br><br>Monday will be a stress test for my <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/peertube" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PeerTube</span></a> instance and how well it deals with concurrent viewers. It'd be fascinating to see its P2P functions at play. In the meantime I'm getting an education in PeerTube optimization.<br><br>Very excited about premiering the Fedi promo video at <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/fediforum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FediForum</span></a> tomorrow (I was about to type in a couple of days but ahhhhhhh it's tomorrow).<br><br>My first <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/fediforum" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FediForum</span></a> last September felt like my personal SuperBowl, plus Christmas plus birthday rolled into one. It was such a fantastic event - truly energizing and heartwarming. It felt incredible to be in the same virtual room as people I had gotten to know in my year on the Fediverse... It was such a special special feeling.<br><br>I never imagined that at the following FediForum I'd be showcasing a video I had made to promote the Fediverse to people who are not familiar with it. She's an absolute legend and icon, whom I admire tremendously, and I'm super honored to present right after her. Elena Rossini on GoToSocial ⁂<p>The fediverse promo video just had its first spectator: my 4-year-old. She came to sit on my lap while I was editing and asked: "can I watch your film?" It was the sweetest thing ever!!! (it's the first time I show her one of my films).<br><br>I skipped over the part about the dark side of Big Tech (no need for her to see the worst people in the world) but she didn't notice.<br><br>When we got to the last sequence - the screen is black because I haven't had time to do the mosaic of fediverse avatars (yet) - she asked me: "why isn't it finished?" Aw little one, if you only knew how long it takes to do a 4-second VFX sequence, LOL. Tomorrow! Tomorrow hopefully the first rough cut will be complete.<br><br>And sort of related: when I was researching my documentary The Illusionists one of the saddest things was reading about the commercialization of childhood. Like how preschoolers already recognize hundreds of brand logos. I've been super present in her life (taking a step back from filmmaking work) and tried to shield my little one from commercial culture. But a moment of pride was this morning. My little one sneaked up behind me while I was editing the fediverse promo video. I pointed to the screen and asked her: "who's that?" She replied enthusiastically: "mamma e Mastodon!" (she calls <a href="https://aseachange.com/tags/plushtodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Plushtodon</span></a> "Mastodon"). I found that adorable. My little one at 4 has no idea about commercial brands but she recognizes the Mastodon mascot. I LOVE THAT.<br><br>Wishing everyone a great evening and pray for me there won't be any overnight surprises - aka I can sleep a full 8 hours and finally tackle the last VFX sequence. #EleFediVideos status update: I'm almost done with a first pass of the motion graphics work.

I just finished a long sequence about the toxic side of Big Tech and I'm happy I'm now moving on to more positive things... namely: the mosaic of profile photos of YOU for the very last shot of the film ❤️

I've got 700+ responses and I only have spots for 135 pics, so sorry if I can't include everyone.

I'm off to play LEGOs with my little one for a quick break... ciao!

I'm currently doing 8 hours of motion graphics a day. Eyes are a little tired but I just reclaimed a dormant superpower (typical of film editors): being able to spot a mistake in a film frame aka 1/24th of a second. We have 🦅​ eyes

I'm spending every second of free time creating motion graphics for my short film introducing the Fediverse to people not familiar with it. It's coming together nicely but it's so much work 😅

Once it's done, I will release the animations with a CC license that allows other creators to re-use them.

I feel bad I haven't been able to interact with you on here but I will be done soon(ish). Maybe for a release during #FediForum?

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 156 (busy bee edition) 🐝

Hello Fedi friends!

Sorry I've been a little quiet over here but any minute of free time I have (aka when my 4-year-old is in pre-school) I spend working on:

1) a promotional video for the Fediverse with my two amazing interns @samaaberg & @patel.riyen -> #EleFediVideos

2) a presentation about how I use #YunoHost for digital sovereignty - at an upcoming #FOSS conference

I just realized - oh the horror - that it's the first time in 5 months I've been skipping my Monday morning routine of #YunoHost manual backups. So this week I'll be doing it on a Thursday, aka right now 😅​

The Fediverse video is coming together really nicely and I cannot wait to share it on here (actually, on my self-hosted #PeerTube).

I'm infinitely grateful to the Fediverse for getting me back to filmmaking and motion graphics after a long hiatus. It feels amazing.
