Shannon Meilak - AdvocateToday I had a meaningful and wide-ranging meeting with Alice Jordan-Baird MP (member for Gorton).We discussed at length the need for legislative change to better support people with disability, focusing on systemic reform that removes barriers, ensures equitable access, and centres lived experience in policymaking.We also explored ways to expand access to the NDIS so that more people with disability can receive the support they need, and how we can improve the NDIS and MyAgedCare systems by simplifying application and review processes. Reducing unnecessary bureaucracy and streamlining staffing structures are key steps to cutting costs without compromising support quality.We spoke about the importance of increasing locally delivered support through councils to better meet community needs and providing necessary funding through greater State Government support.The conversation also touched on environmental concerns, including the urgent need to end fossil fuel subsidies and stop new gas expansions, which threaten our future and disproportionately impact marginalised communities.I'm grateful for the opportunity to raise these issues and look forward to our continued collaboration toward lasting, inclusive change.If you're a person with disability and would like to join a future meeting with Alice and me to contribute your voice to ongoing discussions around disability inclusion and access, feel free to send me a DM. Darker KnightDear AllLast evening I spent several hours in our local pub with another regular whom I've been on nodding terms with for a while as she poured out a long string of climate questions. She is a police officer, around 40 years old, likely centre/left leaning and very interested in getting into the cause/effect discussions about everyday people that we shared. Our Q&A was very revealing and ventured into several areas, my point in posting this overall impression is from that encounter.Boiled down it appears to me that she deals every day with the public which manifests impressions in her world views through the lens of her work that could be balanced by mainstream media sources for adjusting her world. But those fail her, so she feels fatalistic about engaging with it.I mentioned the messaging dog barks of the far-right and how they keep trying to bury discussion & action on climate and how they distract & simplify their messaging styles & that it can only be addressed by communities getting on with their own actions in their own ways, not needing authority or approval. The media is their poodle, they own or control it through governorship and selective appointments (BBC).If you have the time to read through these links you will see the complexity & fullness of science opinions on climate driven bio hazards we now face from the hotter world. And those bio hazards to us from hotter world makes it Personal!But the messaging style is too academic for most people to absorb, even if they wanted to.
