Put a reminder in your calendar, or somehow warn yourself that there will probably be a sudden unexpected noise from your phone at 3pm on the 23rd April as we get our first emergency test broadcast message.

There is an example video on the gov website for what to expect.

gov.uk/alerts

*edited: yes you can turn them off, but first you need to know they’re happening!

GOV.UKAbout Emergency AlertsYour mobile phone or tablet may get an emergency alert if there’s a danger to life nearby. Alerts tell you what to do to stay safe.

@solderandchaos also your tablet if it is 4G or 5G enabled

@solderandchaos Mines not even gone off yet and everyone else’s has which is weird lol

@solderandchaos

@tan

According to my network provider, the emergency alert test will be at 3pm

@solderandchaos Also, though you can turn them off, not everyone around you is necessarily going to do the same. So reminding and bracing yourself may still be important.

(Anxious/hypervigilant person solidarity!)

@solderandchaos cheers - that’s going to be my new phone ringtone.

@solderandchaos is it okay if I copy and paste this text to my own account on the Birdsite? Wont' use your handle just the text - want to spread the message far and wide. No is an acceptable answer

@solderandchaos thank you for that reminder. I've put it into my calender.

@solderandchaos WOW!! ty so much, i'd black out if this happened without prior warning jfc

@solderandchaos I had no idea! Thank you so much for the heads up - I've put it in my calendar. So good to know it's coming, and I'll for sure be sharing this with the anxious beans I know 💖

@solderandchaos
Nice of the twatsicles in government to bother telling people 😡 🤬 . Your post is the first & only thing I've heard about it.
👍 Cheers

@solderandchaos @Jessica On iOS go to Settings > Notifications and scroll to the bottom. Here you’ll find the toggles to stop getting scared to death by something everyone will be talking about anyway. Hope it helps some of you.

@del @solderandchaos

Thank you! Although I'm on Android, this gave me in incentive to find a way to make it better for me, and I now know how to on Samsung devices.

So, if someone else is reading this and wants to know:

Go into the default Messenger app (text/SMS messages will be in there), and then press on the three dotted line on the right, then on Settings. Press on Emergency Alert Settings, and then you can not only configure the alerts, but also experience a preview of exactly what the alert will sound and feel like (if vibrate is turned on).

@solderandchaos Thank you, I had no idea about this and find unexpected loud sounds distressing, so I am very grateful for the warning!!

@Jessica @solderandchaos you can turn them off on iPhone. Go to the notification settings and scroll all the way to the bottom.
