Ball is in parking lot

I have a question: I bought one of these little colour ST7789V2 LCD displays docs.m5stack.com/en/unit/lcd , kind of on a whim, and I cannot get it do anything. `i2c.scan()` on an ESP32 finds the device, but I cannot work out how to send data to it. I had vaguely assumed I could throw a bitmap at it over i2c, but nope. Anybody ever made one of these work?
