So this is an unexpected turn of events, mastodon.lol is shutting down and this is the backstory.

Extremists waging a hate campaign against people buying and playing Hogwarts Legacy were reporting them and demanding their admin (Nathan) implement a full instance block. Some have also been spamming players with end game spoilers out of sheer spite.

This didn't go down well and he found himself on the end of a bunch of abuse accusing him of being a Terf, Nazi, transphobe and antisemite. 🧵

It got so bad that he's had enough and pulled the plug. This is an old instance with 18k active users, so not a trivial decision 🧵

I hope the people responsible reflect on their actions and take lessons from this. Being an admin of a decent sized instance is bloody hard work, on top of the demands of a normal life and they always have to look at the big picture when making decisions. The abuse Nathan got was reprehensible.

Whether It comes from the left or the right, extremism is ugly, and hate is ugly. I came to Mastodon to get away from that as I'm sure most of you did too.
