How long will it be before the UK rejoins the EU?

@jtonline Seems pretty obvious that there is no clear Rejoin party for the next election. So we'll have to wait, let Brexit do more damage before we get a chance to reverse it.

@jtonline no reason the EU wouldn't negotiate for UK accession, but they'd need to be confident the next Tory government wouldn't undo it again. So we either need the Tories to collapse or give up on Brexit -> bare minimum of 10 years from now, more likely 15.

@jtonline who knows ... I voted for what I want to see!

(What's the equivalent slogan to Slava Ukraina? Slava Scotia?)

@jtonline
Given that the UK would rejoin under much less favourable terms (no 1973 rebate), and that many EU countries won't be keen to fast track it, even if the will was there (it's not), it would take a good many years.

As of Scotland, as it's not an independent country, it's not an option until the independence question is resolved. The EU had always been against regional desire of independence within it's members, but as the UK is out, who knows what the attitude would be.

@cedric @jtonline also, it would mean that the UK has to join the eurozone (as it would no longer have its opt-out clause) which doesn't seem like a popular idea among British people.

@jtonline American here, so really, I dunno. But given how dead set Britain seems to be on taking our title of "dumbest country" away from us, I don't see why the EU would let them.

@gokuldas they, very wisely, didn't want us the first time! :)

@jtonline This is difficult because it has the need for an independent Scotland to be done for one category. Now people who vote for that - do they believe that this will happen sooner, later or never?

@jtonline 5th option- after the Celtic Alliance occupies England

@jtonline

This is a very UK-centric way to frame the question, it's not like UK can just buy a ticket and wade back in.

Try this for size:

How long will it be before EU invites UK back ?

@bsdphk fair. Clearly regime change in the UK is a minimum requirement but if I was an EU member state, I'd wait until the UK adopts PR before even considering it.

@jtonline Not in the lifetime of anyone alive today.

@jtonline Probably, never.

The #ClimateEmergency means it's unlikely that any part of the modern political order will survive to 2050. There probably won't be an #EU, or a #UK, or indeed a #Scotland by then, unless we start work urdently on major systemic reform.

@jtonline Given how backward England in particular is, I'd say centuries.

@jtonline Who says they will ever rejoin? Both parties who can hold any power are resolutely against it as they play to racists and nationalists for votes.

@autoerot1ca we'll never rejoin the EU we left, with the deal we had, but I'm old enough to remember when no party wanted to leave. I'd rather join Schengen first though :)

@autoerot1ca @jtonline Playing to a minority for votes works only for so long. Once 80+% of voters want to rejoin, how do you play for votes by refusing to consider it?
