1/ Saw someone talking about the Meta AI chatlogs. They posted phone screenshots of other people's conversations and claimed that all personal info was redacted.

It wasn't. Sensitive infomation was easily revealed by raising the brightness.

If you want to hide text in a screenshot, NEVER use a tool that is translucent (eg highlighter) regardless of how much you go over it.

2/ A fully opaque option is much better, but it's still not foolproof.

On devices like phones where it's hard precisely cover text, you might accidentally leave things uncovered - or your way of covering text might give away hints as to what's behind it!

3/ Your best bet is to rely on fully opaque bars which cover the entirety of a word.

... Just be aware that information can still be gathered by context 😅

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to be a native option for image editing on Android or iOS. It really ought to be a feature!

4/ What about pixelising and blur? They do that on TV and that's okay!
It's not perfect. Faces are complex, letters are not. Note how some letters remain legible in this example.

Also to cut a long story short: When you blur or pixelate something, there's still information about what was originally there.

There are programs out there which analyse how pixellated/blurred text clumps together, and can surprisingly figure out what was originally said.

/5 In any case, the font used in a screenshot can be quickly identified - and information about the font (letter width, kerning, etc) can make guessing/unearthing censored text easier.

It's probably for the better to obfuscate more than you need to. Anything to make it harder to uncover.

/6 And... That's about where my knowledge ends! I'm not a security expert, I'm just someone who's picked up a bunch of things from their time online.

If you're someone who /actually/ knows this stuff, I hope I'm not talking tripe! Feel free to correct me if anything is wrong!

@itsolive also don’t select the block in an image editor and hit delete. It might set the alpha to zero while keeping the content

Would be nice to see dedicated “redact” tools in markup utilities

@itsolive Yeah I had to message the large local community page on FB about this recently. They shared a picture of a passport someone had found, and they used the highlighter tool to "mask" it. Couldn't make it out on my phone without modification, but on my PC monitor every bit of passport information was clearly visible.
