It's been ten years since I bought a desktop PC and now it's starting to feel like time for another one. Imagine my surprise when I saw how much has changed!
- 2.5" SSDs are no longer state-of-the art, M.2 drives are the new standard now?
- Graphics cards are *incredibly* expensive and distinguished in ways I no longer readily understand
- PCI is no longer a thing (RIP my faithful soundcard? )
I feel like I've been thawed from permafrost!
do share what you decide to buy...
@airadam M.2's are more popular and thankfully have come down in price, and they (NVMe) are quite faster than SATA SSD's! However, both can be had for about $50/TB!
Graphics cards are certainly more expensive, but if you're not looking for the most recent you can get some amazing performance for under $200!
PCI is dead, but PCIE does still exist. Your soundcard will want to be framed, I might recommend a USB DAC, most MOBO's have decent sound card but it's nice having the extra control!
@averyminya Do you mean framed like a relic, or is there some kind of adapter? :) This card has very specific benefits which is why I've used it so long - four 1/4 inch jack sockets for input and another four for output (both on a breakout box) with really flexible routing and monitoring options - I've been struggling to find a modern equivalent which isn't primarily set up to take mics rather than line inputs, and which uses software volume controls rather than knobs (for saving/loading config)
@airadam this isn't the one I'm suggesting, but out of curiosity is it something akin to this one: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1331722-REG/esi_esi_m44ex_maya44_ex_4_in_4_out_pcie.html
@averyminya Not quite like that - even more versatile, one of these; http://www.philrees.co.uk/audio/AUDDEL66.html
@airadam@mastodon.me.uk @averyminya@mastodon.social When I upgraded I was tempted to try a PCIe to PCI bridge, but there's no guarantee the audio device would work. However mine was an M-Audio Delta 2496, nothing like as flexible as yours and so not such a loss.
I feel you here. I'm trying to repair my desktop (graphics card went out), and uhhh, my desktop was originally built in 2016, but apparently things have changed enough that I am at a loss on what is best for the replacement vid card. (Gonna do a replacement CPU too).
The new drives have me wondering if I need to swap out my SSDs...
