Trying to set up an Apple ID so I can install an app on an Apple TV. Ye gods, this is painful.
My domain seems to have triggered something and is blocked.
Talking to an agent and the domain block is removed, but it still won't let me create an account.
Ah, but the account was created and the error message was given in error.
Then although I can log into the account on a PC, AppleTV still says "No".
I thought Apple had this user interface thing down pat? Clearly not.
Apparently my verification failed because "an unknown error occurred". This seems to have them stumped.
Getting close to putting this thing back on Ebay and buying an nVidia Shield instead.
Oh good grief. This is ridiculous. Now carrying on this farce to see just how stupid Apple can make the process.
The funny thing is that Apple don't seem to be able to distinguish between AppleTV the subscription TV service and AppleTV the set-top box.
So...
I've managed to get the AppleTV device logged in, but if you want to install an app, you need to have an iTunes store account.
To create an iTunes Store Account, it turns out that you need an iOS or Windows device on which you can install iTunes.
Guess what I don't have any of...
They're now trying to arrange a callback.
The earliest they can do this is Monday next week.
During office hours.
Hmm. The agent is now telling me that there is no such thing as an iTunes Store Account any more as everything now comes under Apple ID.
They can't explain why the AppleTV device is telling me I need an iTunes Store Account.
"in order for us to proceed, are you with someone that has windows pc or apple devices?"
No. Definitely not.
They're now telling me I need to go to an Apple store (as in the high-street shop) to set up an iTunes account.
After just having told me that there is no such thing as an iTunes account any more.
And, finally, they've confirmed that I need to install an app on a Windows/iOS box in order to be able to install an app on an AppleTV box. So quite why they tried palming me off on an Apple shop is beyond me.
Factory reset and unplugged. Next stop ebay.
Anybody want to buy an Apple TV box?
Well, it has to be said, the hardware itself looked good. The user interface, however, would make for a masterclass in how to make a device as user un-friendly as possible (on-screen keyboard is just dire, it forces a complex password and then requires the user to enter that password with the on-screen keyboard every time they try to do something). Awful, awful, awful.
